I am having a string of bad luck in getting a newsgroup account set up in a news reader.

I am using Thunderbird.

This is what I am trying to use to configure the newsgroup account.

I can get Thunderbird to work with my gmail account.

Thanks for any help.

The thing that catches people normally, is
forgetting the "Always request authentication" tick box.

You can see an example of the tick box here. It's under
Server Settings.

It's been checked.

It's weird that it gives no error message when I click Get Messages.

Andy

You've used "Manage Newsgroup Subscriptions", then
toggle the (+) next to "news.eternal.september.org",
exposing your list of subscribed groups ? It
should "Get Messages" when you do that. And update,
as it goes from group to group. If more than
500 messages are in a group, it'll prompt you for
whether you want to get all of them or not.

If you haven't subscribed to any groups, there is
hardly a reason for it to go and check. At least
one group should be in "Subscribed" state, and be
present in the groups list just below the news server
name in the left column.

You'll get no messages, if the numbering is screwed
up. Each group has a low water and high water mark.
If the messages "look old", due to the message numbers
used, that can prevent you from seeing messages. That
also happens, if the server is broken (incoming feed
cut and no actual messages are coming in).

Thanks.

I have got it working in Thunderbird under openSUSE 12.3 (x86_64)
VERSION = 12.3.

I sent a test message to one of their test groups and it showed up quickly.

Newest message is 9/1/13 for this group, but other groups have messages from today.

I will save some screen shots of the configuration in Thunderbird, and use them to get Thunderbird working in Windows.

I think with the newsreader, it won't be posting those blank spaces in messages
that Google Groups do and that bring tears to some folks.

Tired.

Later,
Andy

Sent via Firefox.

Eternal September supports both un-authenticated and authenticated
operations.

If you connect, using a newsreader and don't send a username/password,
then the newsgroup list has around twelve groups in it. And the twelve
groups include the support groups for E-S, so you can ask for help.

When you tick the "Request Authentication" box, and then connect,
the newsgroup list grows to thousands. You would need to "refresh"
the newsgroup list, to see all the groups, and subscribe to some
real ones like microsoft.public.windowsxp.general .

A sign it is partially working, is being able to post to an E-S support
group. But only when you send the username/password (request authentication),
is it really working.

TB would not accept this, nntp:news.mozilla.org,
so I used news.mozilla.org.

I have completed it and the password is failing.

Which password am I supposed to use ?

The name of the moz news server is news.mozilla.org and the connection
security is none and the port is 119 and the always request
authentication should *NOT* be checked.
I have completed it and the password is failing.

Do not check always request authentication for news.mozilla.org

*DO* check always request authentication for news.eternal-september.org
Which password am I supposed to use ?

Moz: No authentication check and the password manager should *not*
appear requesting user or pass.

e-s: Authentication check and the password manager *SHOULD* appear
requesting user & pass.
