Toshiba Portege 3480ct - can't install XP

Hi

I've got a Toshiba Portege 3480ct (bios version 1.40) which I had
running Windows 2000 Professional - I recently tried to upgrade it to
Windows Xp SP2 - it copied all the files across and then went to
restart but then crashed.

I've tried various things and have now:
- formatted the hard drive and removed all partitions using Fdisk
- bought an external Toshiba PCMCIA cd-rom drive (model: 2793020-uk)

If on booting I have the option (by pressing f2) to boot from cd - this
seems to work with the pcmcia drive and the windows XP installer starts
loading - it does all its "setup is loading files" driver loading
and then gets to "setup is starting windows" before it blue screens
with a critical stop with a message which includes:

"....check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed
hard drive or hard drive controllers....."
and

"technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0Xfc907524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000,
0x00000000)"

please help as my laptop has now gone from a working win 2000 machine
to a useless box!

Create another partition, copy the contents of the XP CD to the new
partition and boot with a floppy disk to install from the hard drive, also
known as installing from a flat.
See the link below to get more detailed step by step on doing the install.
Substitute CD location for hard drive location.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.
