TIL of a very special number.

It's 142857. Doesn't seem very special but look................

1 x 142857 = 142857
2 x 142857 = 285714
3 x 142857 = 428571
4 x 142857 = 571428
5 x 142857 = 714285
6 x 142857 = 857142

The same six numbers are in all the answers but in a different order. :D

And if you multiply by 7?

7 x 142857 = 999999

And there's more.

142 + 857 = 999
14 + 28 + 57 = 99

142857² = 20408122449
20408 + 122449 = 142857 ;)

And here are some more interesting numbers.

111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321

12 + 3 - 4 + 5 + 67 + 8 + 9 = 100
123 - 45 - 67 + 89 = 100
123 + 4 - 5 +67 - 89 =100
123 - 4 -5 -6 - 7 + 8 - 9 = 100
1 +23 - 4 + 5 + 6 + 78 - 9 = 100

  • 1 x 8 + 1 = 9
    12 x 8 + 2 = 98
    123 x 8 + 3 = 987
    1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
    12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765
    123456 x 8 + 6 = 987654
    1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876543
    12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
    123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321

And 12345679 x 9 = 111111111

Fascinating. :)

It's never too early for maths

A physicist, a biologist and a mathematician sit in a sidewalk cafe, looking at the building across the road. Two people go into the building, then three people come out.

Physicist: "This must be a measuring error!"

Biologist: "This is proof of procreation!"

Mathematician: "If one more person goes into the building, it will be empty!"

:p

TIL: Wikipedia bans Daily Mail as 'unreliable' source

Summarising the discussion, a Wikipedia editor wrote: “Consensus has determined that the Daily Mail (including its online version dailymail.co.uk) is generally unreliable, and its use as a reference is to be generally prohibited, especially when other more reliable sources exist. As a result, the Daily Mail should not be used for determining notability, nor should it be used as a source in articles. An edit filter should be put in place, going forward to warn editors attempting to use the Daily Mail as a reference.”

Ahem... the honor was well deserved and long overdue. :thumb:
