To clarify the link for CWShredder Update

  • Thread starter Thread starter LuckyStrike

The link from George still has ver 1.49.1 on it. Has any newer
versions surfaced anywhere?

Yes. I've got 1.50.

Siljaline keeps us all up to date with postings in many locations,
including:
http://forum.mvps.org/viewforum.php?f=28

On http://aumha.org/freeware.htm I keep download links for CWShredder,
including an alternate one during the current DDoS crisis. Here is one that
works and gives the latest:

May I just point out that to the average person coming into this group..
the fact that that post was...

a. majorly cross posted
b. and with the sig line of Lucky Strike
(e-mail address removed)

Of which both together to the reasonably paranoid person ... I wouldn't
click on those links either.

It looked like a distribution of a virus or bogus code even if it was
not. Unfortunately we have to be careful these days.

Although it may "appear" suspicious to you, and evidently to others, I would
still stand firm in my position which is as follows:

1) Multiple "major" cross-posting for such updates is not unprecedented, in
fact I've seen it often.
Reasonably paranoid means nothing and is entirely "subjective".

2) I take exception to your reference to my Sig. First it's prejudicial;
second, would it make a difference if it were "Joan", "Jim", "James", or
"Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm"? You'd be just as foolish and prejudicial to
click on one of those because they appealed to ones "White Bread Goody
Two-Shoes" sensibilities. In fact, in my mind that would be a more convincing
way to perpetrate such a scam. Have you not ever heard of reverse
psychology?

I might also add -as I have already in part - who the heck *would* post a
virus or whatever, with a name "Virus Master", "Hell-Raiser" or whatever,
and then have a URL that said "Parasites - get them here". That wouldn't be
a very effective way to ensnare someone if the intention was to spread or
*broadcast* a virus in my view.

I have already stated at first light of day -for me- that perhaps I should
have made clearer the URL and other factors. So, what did I do? Just that,
with multiple references, step by step, a multiple number of times as well.
Furthermore, my position was supported (finally) by a number of persons
ranging from those who can read and recognize, to the very Webmaster of the
site in question.

Addressing your "average person" position: What kind of MVP-MCSE, posts back
what I received as a reply? Is that a remark from the <quote/> *average
person* <end/>? Sub-Standard MVP in my view. The person obviously spent only
a microsecond before jumping to a snap decision - which need I remind you -
was inaccurate and wrong. This person, and obviously yourself as well, did
not recognize that a good portion of the URL was from Jim Eshelmans highly
esteemed site, which is *commonly* referred to in numerous newsgroups. And
as yet, have I received a retraction or an apology? NO! I haven't.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly: Do you realize that this is a very
serious charge to make against a person, when it is a *CRIME* and UNLAWFUL
to send, spread, and create viruses that are intended to wreak havoc on /
through the Internet? So I feel I have no need to apologize for my well
meaning, genuine, accurate, helpful, and NON-VIRAL post and link. I feel I
am owed an apology by the person who was wrong. It's that simple.

And I have *no need* to apologize for my Sig either. It's irrelevant, and
although it has no bearing whatsoever, I have seen far "worse" sigs, which I
will not even bother to repeat as they are beneath me. The only apology I
would offer is to Jim Eshelman himself, and for obvious reasons. This I had
done already, in advance, and was reassured that it was unnecessary.

I must exercise my fifth amendment right to utter silence. And another
thing... silence is golden! Oh, oh! I get it! You are objecting to the
crossposting. Well, turn it off; that's all!

Lucky - I didn't want to jump back in with quick remarks given how much
cross-posting this has - but felt I should on this. (I'll make it quick.)

(1) I hear that you were personally insulted by Susan's remarks, and I sure
can't argue with your feelings on that. If it feels like a slap, it must
have been a slap.
(2) I trust you know by now that I sincerely appreciate all of your kind
comments directed to me and to my site, and am happy the links are being
rolled out into service - to help folks.
(3) I needed to step back in to say that Susan Bradley is not a
"sub-standard MVP" and, in fact, is a pretty cool person. Feathers are
getting ruffled here between two people that ultimately have very similar
motivations about helping folks.

FWIW.

Good morning Jim,

I take very well what you've just said, and it's been expressed with a
simple elegance.

I did start to get off into a "rant" of sorts and it might have been a tad
too harsh for Susan's reply to me. However in fact, I was directing that
"sub-standard" remark to Svyatoslav Pidgorney and not Susan; no doubt a
misunderstanding perhaps due to my wording, or sentence construct. I have
read many of Susan's posts in the past and have generally held her in high
esteem.

So, to you I again express gratitude for your understanding, and above all
for your willingness to go a step further in the aid of people and their PC
woes.

To Susan I express my apologies if I appeared to, or in fact did "attack"
her. It wasn't really my intention to do so. My intention was to make clear
the rationale for my decision and actions, and lastly to add a note
regarding my "Sig".

BTW, It was worth a lot Jim. ;-)

Best of regards,

No offense take, I was just trying to point out that these days we have
to be very careful. I just know Slav ...and now I know you through Jim,
and through seeing what you do and also via Jim's remarks. Both you and
Slav both have good intentions and are truly working on the same side.

And if I have a personal paranoid level that just automatically pops up
to a higher defcon level when someone doesn't use their real name and
uses a "Sig" AND cross posts ... I'm just a paranoid person and even as
a result knowing Jim's site... I'd manually type in that link rather
than clicking on a hyperlink in a posted newsgroup posting these days.
[Don't take any offense on that either... it's just the way I am :-) I
hang around too many security listserves with hushmail accounts used as
posting addresses, so I just naturally get paranoid when seeing a "sig".
Sad but true these days, the script kiddies are making me question and
be a lot more paranoid than I used to be.

So understand if those of us who are paranoid like me just react a bit
and just remind people that to be careful out here and truly ...even
with the official MS stuff.... always manually type in that web address
and know where you are going. I do indeed know Jim's site. But I still
wouldn't click on that hyperlink in your email [but don't take it
personally :-)

Hi Susan,

Well then, I believe that this has been resolved to a level of mutual
satisfaction for the two of us. I appreciate your further response and the
tenor of it, and therefore wish to say I recognize what you are saying, and
why your position is what it is.

I am pleased that your "skin is not so thin" as mine might appear to be, but
I still I wish to apologize to you "personally" in this post (since we are
here) if my reply was a bit too strong and harsh. I was just a little
high-strung by the whole course of events.

Still, I am *waiting* for a reply of *apology from my accuser*, and will not
be satisfied until such retraction and public apology is made. Easy to slam,
not so easy to eat some humble pie. I know; I have had to use some pretty
large spoons on far too many occasions, but such is my responsibility and
manners if I've been in the wrong.

OK...'nuff said about that. <s>

Maybe, I'll learn a bit, but do you know what? I clicked on your link. My PC
blew up! Hehehe, just kidding. But I still have a modicum of (fast fading)
faith in the overall goodness of (a selected few) some of humanity. So I did
click it, and am not at all surprised at the direction expressed by it's
author. I too do not believe (generally speaking) that things are going for
the better. Sometimes a glimmer of hope...and then sometimes pure unbridled
cynicism. Oh, the duality! (in the hope that I made sense in this last
paragraph.)

See you around then Susan? I hope so.

Best Regards,

Of which both together to the reasonably paranoid person ... I wouldn't

It looked like a distribution of a virus or bogus code even if it was
not. Unfortunately we have to be careful these days.

For my (counter-)culturally deprived sister, I offer:

<paste>
Step right up, step right up, step right up,
Everyone's a winner, bargains galore
That's right, you too can be the proud owner
Of the quality goes in before the name goes on
One-tenth of a dollar, one-tenth of a dollar, we got service after sales
You need perfume? we got perfume, how 'bout an engagement ring?
Something for the little lady, something for the little lady,
Something for the little lady, hmm
Three for a dollar
We got a year-end clearance, we got a white sale
And a smoke-damaged furniture, you can drive it away today
Act now, act now, and receive as our gift, our gift to you
They come in all colors, one size fits all
No muss, no fuss, no spills, you're tired of kitchen drudgery
Everything must go, going out of business, going out of business
Going out of business sale
Fifty percent off original retail price, skip the middle man
Don't settle for less
How do we do it? how do we do it? volume, volume, turn up the volume
Now you've heard it advertised, don't hesitate
Don't be caught with your drawers down,
Don't be caught with your drawers down
You can step right up, step right up

That's right, it filets, it chops, it dices, slices,
Never stops, lasts a lifetime, mows your lawn
And it mows your lawn and it picks up the kids from school
It gets rid of unwanted facial hair, it gets rid of embarrassing age spots,
It delivers a pizza, and it lengthens, and it strengthens
And it finds that slipper that's been at large
under the chaise lounge for several weeks
And it plays a mean Rhythm Master,
It makes excuses for unwanted lipstick on your collar
And it's only a dollar, step right up, it's only a dollar, step right up

'Cause it forges your signature
If not completely satisfied, mail back unused portion of product
For complete refund of price of purchase
Step right up
Please allow thirty days for delivery, don't be fooled by cheap imitations
You can live in it, live in it, laugh in it, love in it
Swim in it, sleep in it,
Live in it, swim in it, laugh in it, love in it
[My favorite part:]
Removes embarrassing stains from contour sheets, that's right
And it entertains visiting relatives, it turns a sandwich into a banquet
Tired of being the life of the party?
Change your shorts, change your life, change your life
Change into a nine-year-old Hindu boy, get rid of your wife,
And it walks your dog, and it doubles on sax
Doubles on sax, you can jump back Jack, see you later alligator
See you later alligator
And it steals your car
It gets rid of your gambling debts, it quits smoking
It's a friend, and it's a companion,
And it's the only product you will ever need
Follow these easy assembly instructions it never needs ironing
Well it takes weights off hips, bust, thighs, chin, midriff,
Gives you dandruff, and it finds you a job, [hell,] it is a job
And it strips the phone company free take ten for five exchange,
And it gives you denture breath
And you know it's a friend, and it's a companion
And it gets rid of your traveler's checks
It's new, it's improved, it's old-fashioned
Well it takes care of business, never needs winding,
Never needs winding, never needs winding
Gets rid of blackheads, the heartbreak of psoriasis,
Christ, you don't know the meaning of heartbreak, buddy,
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon
'Cause it's effective, it's defective, it creates household odors,
It disinfects, it sanitizes for your protection
It gives you an erection, it wins the election
Why put up with painful corns any longer?
It's a redeemable coupon, no obligation, no salesman will visit your home
We got a jackpot, jackpot, jackpot, prizes, prizes, prizes, all work
guaranteed
How do we do it, how do we do it, how do we do it, how do we do it

Every CPA should know this song! <VBG>

Heh! You know Bear, if PCR had my moniker and Sig (that's sig not "cig")
he'd include the whole blasted tune at the end of every post; be grateful
that it is I, LS, man of few words that has chosen it! ;-D

My thanks for illustrating to Susan the "source code" for my handle. <S>

There's a law against having more than one. ;-o See? you can't have *any*
fun anywhere.

Only a few small steps from: Everything is permitted except for that which
is forbidden-->everything is forbidden except that which is
permitted -->everything which is not forbidden is compulsory.

Can I help it if I lead a paranoid sheltered life :-)

May I just point out that to the average person coming into this group..
the fact that that post was...

a. majorly cross posted
b. and with the sig line of Lucky Strike
(e-mail address removed)
Of which both together to the reasonably paranoid person ... I wouldn't
click on those links either.

It looked like a distribution of a virus or bogus code even if it was
not. Unfortunately we have to be careful these days.

For my (counter-)culturally deprived sister, I offer:

<paste>
And a *smoke-damaged furniture, you can drive it away today
*Act now, act now, and receive as our gift, our gift to you
They come in all colors, one size fits all
No muss, no fuss, no spills, you're tired of kitchen drudgery
Everything must go, going out of business, going out of business
Going out of business sale
Fifty percent off original retail price, skip the middle man
Don't settle for less
How do we do it? how do we do it? volume, volume, turn up the volume
Now you've heard it advertised, don't hesitate
Don't be caught with your drawers down,
Don't be caught with your drawers down
You can step right up, step right up

That's right, it filets, it chops, it dices, slices,
Never stops, lasts a lifetime, mows your lawn
And it mows your lawn and it picks up the kids from school
It gets rid of unwanted facial hair, it gets rid of embarrassing age spots,
It delivers a pizza, and it lengthens, and it strengthens
And it finds that slipper that's been at large
under the chaise lounge for several weeks
And it plays a mean Rhythm Master,
It makes excuses for unwanted lipstick on your collar
And it's only a dollar, step right up, it's only a dollar, step right up

'Cause it forges your signature
If not completely satisfied, mail back unused portion of product
For complete refund of price of purchase
Step right up
Please allow thirty days for delivery, don't be fooled by cheap imitations
You can live in it, live in it, laugh in it, love in it
Swim in it, sleep in it,
Live in it, swim in it, laugh in it, love in it
