To clarify the link for CWShredder Update

L

LuckyStrike

This morning I saw that a certain Svyatoslav Pidgorny, MVP, MCSE slammed me
for <quote/> "Distributing viruses, huh?" <end/quote> in response to my post
Subject: New CWShredder update available which was dated Wednesday, February
25, 2004 2:34 AM (MST)

I have not in anyway offered a link that contains a virus, or am in any way
distributing a virus! I demand a retraction and an apology from that person.

Now, you may follow through in a logical and orderly manner through these
links to see that the link I offered is Bona Fide and genuine, if you care
to do so.

Windows Support Center
James A. Eshelman, Proprietor & Webmaster

http://www.aumha.org/support.htm
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.htm
No www. is required for the link I initially offered for CWShredder at the
bottom of this page.
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.php
http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

This website is about getting help solving computer problems and getting
support for Microsoft products using the Microsoft Communities, or the NNTP
equivalent, newsgroups.
http://www.dts-l.org/
http://www.dts-l.org/gallery.htm
Jim Eshelmans original link :
http://free.freespeech.org/Khephra/
now redirects to:
http://www.aumha.org/

So we have come full circle. I hope this will clarify matters as it appears
that some of you may have been put off by the name of the URL that was
offered. If you're not satisfied with this, I'm sorry, but it's the best I
could do to allay your concerns. If this has done nothing to assuage your
worries, *don't* install the update then. Suit yourselves and you be the
judge.

Again, I expect a full and complete apology from this person Svyatoslav
Pidgorny, who has wrongfully accused me of "distributing viruses".

Hi LuckyStrike,

I can't speak for Slav, but thank you for posting the link.
I haven't been able to update from Merijn's site for the last week or so and
I definitely appreciate the update.

I'm with Larry on this one. I don't know where Slav came up with the
"distributing parasites" comment. Your links go to Jim Eshelman's site and Jim
is a very well known, highly respected, and long time member of the MVP
community. There is absolutely no reason to ever fear going to his pages. A
search of many MS groups will document the number of times that we send people
to Jim's invaluable pages and I even include one of them in my signature. I too
think you deserve an apology in this instance as does Jim Eshelman.

Doc and Larry,

You're both very welcome. I should have made it a bit more clear initially,
as the URL is one that does not have a very appealing nor inviting name.

Due to the DDoS Attack that has been ongoing for the last week or better,
most, as you well know, have been unable to access *any* program downloads,
updates, help sites such as Spyware Info, TomCoyote,Merijn and the like.
Customarily, Merjin will have 3, if not more, updates to CWShredder in a
weeks time. I just felt that somewhere one would find a site not yet hit by
the attack. I sure hope that Jim's site will help others with this, and he
offers a great Web Site in general. I'm also hoping that all of this
*attention* that has been made by having to repost and clarify all of this
will not bring any undue weight to bear upon his site, or the availability
of updates through the same link therein.

Thanks for your support, and my best regards.

George, I deeply appreciate your understanding and support on this. You
know, as do so many others of Jims wonderful site and his unflagging
devotion to helping others. I should have realized that the links URL might
have had "suspicious connotations" for those who lack that familiarity
however. By the same token, who the heck would try to spread a virus with a
link that said get virus download here? :-D

I would never knowingly -or in anyway- do such a thing as that of which I
was accused. The fact is, that I only have respect and regards of the
highest order for the MS newsgroups and those that come or "work" here. It
is also my feeling to try to help as much as I have been helped; *and* I
have been helped in so many ways by so many people both "known" (at this
point) and unknown. Sharing is the right thing to do.

I would just like to say in my own defense that being accused of
distributing viruses is a very serious matter, not to be taken lightly.

Again, I appreciate your kindness and your having stood behind me in
this.<S>

Best Regards,

J

Jim,

I just want to thank you for your persistent devotion to help others and for
the great links that abound in your wonderful site. I hope the ruckus and
uproar I have potentially created will not have any untoward and negative
impact. If it has, I extend my sincerest apologies, and hope that in some
way I can be forgiven or at least to somehow (how?) make up for it.

Thanks to George, I just wandered into this thread, and I'm not sure where
all the brouhaha started - but thought I'd say a thing or three in response
to what I've been reading.

A whole lotta folks (thank goodness) are joining the "parasite fight" these
days and, while many are doing a spectacular job, nobody has moved more
mountains than Merijn, who has my respect and gratitude. For his programs
and instructions, I link straight to the source -- except, of course, when
the source is unavailable, as with the recent and prolonged DDoS attacks he
has suffered.

When this hit - and Merijn's site became, for a time unavailable - Silj was
kind enough to give me alternate download links for most of what's
available. I've added these liberally in various places on my site (always -
in case it matters to anyone - marking them as alternate links to
distinguish them from the primary ones).

My own evolving best efforts to aid the war can be found here:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm
http://forum.mvps.org/index.php?c=12

Links (including alternate links) to some of the more popular and useful
antiparasite tools, including CWShredder, can also be found on the "My
Favorite Freeware" page: http://aumha.org/freeware.htm

If anyone has a need for four different ways to get to each of the previous
pages, you may add www. to the front of any of them, and substitute
winsupportcenter.com for aumha.org. Pick your favorite flavor <g>.

Lucky, you flatter me enormously, and I'm happy you continue to find the
site valuable and helpful. This summer will mark 5 years it's been going
and, over time, one can accumulate a bunch of stuff. I've tried to make the
site into the tool that *I* like to use. A bunch of other folks have said
that this approach works just fine for them and they can find their way
around.

Don't worry about my bandwidth consumption. I haven't yet begun to hit the
available bandwidth limits despite lots and lots of hits. Send all the flood
of genuinely interested people that you want, either to the site itself -
http://aumha.org/ - or to the forums at http://forum.aumha.org/ - or to
both.

And if this makes me a target for those attacks, too... well, I don't want
to make life harder on the kind folks at pair.com, though they have the
resources to fight almost any attack that can be levied. And I don't want to
be mistaken for a supporter of a certain politician by shouting, "Bring'em
on!" But... well, I really do have a ton of bandwidth and a webhost support
team that knows how to fight (and has something like 6x bandwidth overage),
so let's just say I have no anxiety about being turned into a target as a
result of your circulating links to my site. We're handling the first 3
million hits a month just fine, and we could double that without a bandwidth
problem.

On the other hand, it sucks like a Hoover that one of my fellow MVPs levied
the attack that he did. Too bad I won't be seeing him in April so we can
throw shots of vodka at each other from 10 paces (and then buy each other a
few refills). I'm willing to accept this as his having a bad day and
tripping over the Send button due to both feet being in his mouth (I've
Bindar Dundat <s>). But I'm sorry you got bullied by it, Lucky.

Jim,

My fault; I started it by posting your link for CWShredder - which I
fortuitously stumbled upon while cruising your site, as I do with a certain
regularity - and then due to not really "spelling out well" a description of
the URL link, started the commotion by being slammed by you know who.

At any rate, the dust is settling; your understanding and support -in more
ways than one- is appreciated, and I'm glad you will be able to withstand
any possible onslaught of Bandwidth that this will consume, as well as being
most able to effectively "duke it out with the bad guys". <S>

Your site works great; *even I* can navigate my way though the huge amount
of info you offer. Therefore, I'm wishing you 5 more (make that 10 if you
can handle it. Hope so!) successful and great years doing what you do so
well!

Perhaps you might care to examine the start of this thread or any number of
others that pertain to it. There have been numerous references to a version
1.5 available from:

Do not let the name of the URL "throw you"; This happens to be a valid link
from a most valid site, namely:
