Hey all,,,,
New to XP,,,just got a laptop w/ XP Prof. on it,,
(configured by the company IT guys). I tried to go to the
Windows Update site to have it scan me but I got
an "access denied" message from the website. Network
Policy settings prevent you from using Windows
Update......etc...
I'm betting it's some "security setting" our IT dept. has
on.
Can I change that and how?

you need to login as adminstrator to update the patches

Check with the IT gang. Some IT gangs intentionally disallow updates
(or try to) to control what users get on their PCs.
