I have a slimtype DVDRW SOSW x5rs drive in a Nobilis Laptop running XP Pro
SP2. Under device manager I am getting under device status "This device
cannot start. (Code 10). I have attempted to update the driver but none are
available and I have uninstalled and reinstalled through device manager with
0 success. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Hello,

Is it a strict USB 2.0 device that you are trying to use with a USB 1.1
port? That could be a possible reason - it requires USB 2.0 to function.

Try using it on another computer/laptop to confirm that it is not a device
problem.

Also try connecting it directly to the ports behind the computer, not
through any USB port replicators.

This is a CD/DVD internal drive for a laptop. Not a USB device. I have
attempted to replace the drive and get the same error with 2 different
drives.

or the driver

Code 10
If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that
string appears as the error message. The driver or enumerator puts this
registry string value there. If there is no FailReasonString in the
hardware key, you receive the following error message:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Device failed to start. Click Update Driver to update the drivers for
this device. On the General Properties tab of the device, click

Are you installing the correct driver for the device? The device
manufacturer is the best place to get the correct, current driver.

Yes I did on both devices. I am thinking it could be a motherboard problem
or something. It is showing up in the bios though so I am really confused.

You haven't ever said what the "device" is, so yes, it could be
motherboard or drivers too.

Yes, I have experienced exactly the same problem. I installed iTunes on my Laptop and this caused the CD Rom drive to fail. I know this to be the case because I managed to get the CD rom to work (Dell told me a couple of registry entries to delete), but as soon as iTunes updated, the same problem reappeared. Unfortunately I don't know which registry entries to delete, as my laptop is no longer under warranty and so I am now stuck with a useless drive. If anyone knows which entries to delete, that would be greatly appreciated.
