i am trying to install windows on a blank hard drive, i put the windows home
edition cd in and start to load the set-up but before it gives me any options
this message comes up... "The file fastfat.sys is corrupted. Press any key to
continue." the when you press any key it says... " Set up Failed. Press any
key to restart your computer." then i press any key and it restarts and it
does the same thing again load installation set up and does the same thing
over again, this is a blank (formatted) hard drive with nothing saved on it.
what can i do to install windows?

Hi Luis,

Is your CD scratched? Maybe wash it with soap and water (no I'm not
kidding).

Do you have good memory in your machine? These files are loaded into RAM. If
your BIOS has the wrong CPU / Front Side BUS speed settings - this could be
a problem too.

Try cleaning the XP installation CD, and use a cleaning disk in the CD
drive. Try a different XP installation CD. How much memory is installed in
the computer. If more than one stick try with just one.

Your WinXP CD could be damaged or maybe your CD drive
is marginal. I would test this CD on a friend's PC. If it works
there then I would burn a copy straight away.

But it says right on the CD: "Do not make illegal copies of this disc".

That is correct. Making a backup copy of the Windows XP install disk is
not illegal.

you are allowed to make a backup ...just not use it on another computer

Also look into the possibility that the drive cable that connects your
CD to your PC is damaged. I've had a few errors like this go away
after replacing the data cable.

Yes, you can back up the media; you just can't use the license key on
more than the allowed number of systems. It's the license keys that
MS is more protective of than the CD media itself.
