Corrupt Fastfat.sys

Have been using my Dell Inspiron 4000 for 2+ years with no
problem. Upgraded to Windows XP Home Addition long time
ago, no problem.

On boot, I get a whirring noise out of the hard drive and
an error message saying that the system32
\drivers\fastfat.sys file is corrupt or can't be found. I
am trying to reinstall with Windows XP upgrade disks but I
am not getting anywhere.

Anyone know what the solution is?
