Strange Boot Freeze problem that I can't track down.

I've got a strange boot problem that I can't track down. It began when I
reinstalled XP with sp2 slipstreamed. I do not believe it to be an sp
issue since it continued to occur when I tried re-installing with my sp1
slipstream disk, which has been used for installs several times without
a problem.

First of all, TIA for any suggestions!

* WindowsXP freezes on boot up when the boot screen appears, but instead
of "WindowsXP" turning white it stops when grey. No amount of resets
changes this behaviour. NOTE: This was a fresh install with no change in
the hardware.

* Booting to safe mode works.
* Used MSCONFIG to set /bootlog /sos /basevideo in the boot.ini
* Boot to normal mode works.

* All hard drives were checked for possible errors. No hardware errors
were found. Any file system errors on extra hard drives were fixed by
formatting (not quick) all hard drives.

* Removed the /basevideo setting. System boots fine.
* System runs fine using either default drivers loaded at OS install or
later with the latest manufacturer drivers. Boot freeze occurs one
morning a couple of weeks later
* System worked again after safe mode and replacing /basevideo setting.
NOTE: Something that seems odd is that with the /bootlog and /sos
settings the system shows, at boot, that the drives are scanned. Usually
it only shows the two drives with basic partitions. Occasionally it also
shows the other three drives with dynamic partitions. It seems odd that
the behaviour would vary.

* Below is a comparison of the last portion of the ntblog.txt (the
portion that seems the most surprising to me).
* What I can't figure out is why the hidusb.sys and the mouhid.sys load
so many times in normal boot (which is the boot that I have problems
with), it loads once on safe mode and once in /basevideo mode.
* Fastfat.sys does not load at all in the failed boot.

* NOTE: Over the last few months I've been having mouse freezing
problems. Usually removing all mouse & video software as well as
uninstalling the mouse and USB root will remove the problem…for a time
(and then it returns again).

Hi,

First, I would suggest you to update the mobo BIOS as well as the chipset
drivers.
Also check for the ram sticks to ensure they are all properly and firmly
seated into the DIMM slots.
If there is no improvement, try remove your ram sticks and then just use one
256MB or 512 MB ram stick and boot again.
You can also run some ram checking program to check the ram sticks to
ensure they are working properly.

BIOS updated, no chipset driver updates.
RAM checks out ok.

Would you mind explaining your thinking as to how the bootlog
information and the RAM are linked. What I find strange is that the
bootlog is not the same for every normal boot. For example, with the
last two boots there has not been the excessive loading of hidusb.sys
and mouhid.sys.

What would cause these two drivers to load differently?

I had begun to suspect that the video card was to blame for recent boot
freezes, however now I'm starting to question the mouse. But I'd like to
know more about the boot operation and the loading of drivers,
especially as related to the hidusb.sys and mouhid.sys.
