'the connection to the server has failed

I just tried to set up windows mail on my laptop to open my work mail
account, following the directions on the website. However, when I
tried to open my mail in windows mail I recieved an error message that said
that 'the connection to the server has failed. Your IMAP command could not be
sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example,
indicate a lack of memory on your system.'
I don't have any problem using my internet normally to browse or viewing my
email through a browser window and I also don't have the 'log on using Secure
password Authentication' box checked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

My anti-virus is "Panda sofware 2007". Now I'm using "Motzilla Thunderbird",
but I want to use windows mail.

In Windows Mail, error messages that say you have a lack of memory
are often actually due to interference from an antivirus program. What
if any antivirus programs do you have, and have you ever had a Norton
or McAfee antivirus program on that computer, even one of the free trial
versions that often come already installed on new computers?

Also, that error message looks like it's missing some of the parts we need
to offer much help. Right click on the error message and copy all of it to
your next message. If that error message doesn't make it clear what
email provider you are trying to use, tell us that too. Many people choose
their internet providers as their email providers also since most internet
accounts include one or more email accounts.

The connection to the server has failed. Account: '(e-mail address removed)',
Server: 'maine.rr.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket
Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I am trying to get my email from my home computer to my laptop that is set
up same router but wireless. I keep getting the same error. can you help/

You can't get email from one computer to another (very easily)...
The best you can do with POP email is to set your email program (on both
computers) to leave the messages on the server after downloading. Then you
have the chance to get the same messages downloaded to both computers.

Look at the server settings on the desktop computer to see what you have to
enter on the laptop.
Tools - Accounts - youraccount - Properties

"maine.rr.com" is not complete...
it's probably more like "pop-server.maine.rr.com"

I can't get my mail through Windows Mail. It just suddently quit
working.

I tried everything that I read on these forums and still nothing works.
I changed to port 587, and made sure my settings matched what comcast
suggested on their website. I turned off e-mail scanning from AVG (I
know, there might be a conflict, but it worked for 2 months just fine).

The last thing I tried to fix it was to reset defaults for the
firewall, but made an exception for Windows Mail. I reset default
settings inside of Window's Mail, and for IE.

I ran Zenmap and I have 5 open ports. Zenmap will do a scan, but
terminate itself saying:

"Strange connect error from [my IP] (10013): No such file or directory
Assertion failed: 0, file .\src\nsock_core.c, line 290

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an
unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more
information. Scanning 6 services on [my IP]"

Is that the same file, where I saw in earlier postings where people
have code to insert to fix it?

As a test, uninstall AVG antivirus, then try Windows Mail again.
If that cured the problem, reinstall AVG, but be sure to select
'custom' install, which then allows you to unselect installing its
troublesome email scanning module.
