I have two email accounts that I check using Windows Mail. I've had these
set for almost 2 years now. Tonight I tried to check, but got the error
message below. I've rechecked the account properties, and everything seems
to be set correctly. I can't send or receive mail. Help!!!

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.card-couture.com',
Server: 'mail.card-couture.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'pop.surewest.net', Server: 'smtp.surewest.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

The second error message pertains to sending.
When you got that error message, was your Internet connection being
obtained from SureWest? Or were you on a laptop away from home?
As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server you are using must be
the same as the entity providing your Internet connection at that moment.
For more on this issue see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently,
substitute the SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is a bit
tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, set it up in Windows Mail, and use that for
your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked
like port 25 is.

The first and third error messages pertain to receiving.
Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time. Make sure the antivirus is not configured to
scan emails.

I'm getting these messages at my home computer, where I've had these accounts
established for a long time. My internet connection is working fine. Any
other ideas?

Socket error #10061 is a Connection Refused

For some reason the server is refusing connections. It might be temporary.

In that case, my second piece of advice still stands (regarding your
antivirus).

Do you get an error message when you try to send or receive? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.
