Connection to the Server has failed

I've done everything by every set of instructions I found online. Tried POP,
Imap, tried different server name combinations, ports. Only have windows
defender, so antivirus programs aren't much a problem. Constant internet
connection, it seems like I have everything done by the book. I'm clueless as
to what I'm to do to set up my gmail acount on Windows Mail or even Windows
Live Mail? PLEASE help me out someone!

This is what I've been getting:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.gmail.com', Server:
'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error:
10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Your settings (as evidenced by the error message) look good.

That type of error is usually caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off your antivirus email scanning function does not resolve
your problem, consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it
is less prone to suffering bad effects from overly intrusive antivirus
programs: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Do you get an error message? If so, right-click on the error message,
copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

There is nothing wrong with any anti-virus because I don't have anything
installed. All I have is Wndows Defender but as far as I know that is
compatible with Wndows Mail. I did draw a conclusion that it works when I'm
at school using the schools network, and it has a hard time with the network
I have setup at home. I have a lynksys router. Is there anything that you
know that I would have to do with my router because I'm most positive it has
to be the router. Thanks.

Yes, Windows Defender is 100% compatible.

When you initially purchased that computer did it have a trial version
of an antivirus like Norton or McAfee? Even their uninstall often leaves
troublesome debris behind.

If your router was causing this problem it would also affect web browsing,
but you didn't mention that.

Yes I did have symantec antivirus, and I unistalled it. I found a link to
clean any remains if there are any but the cleanup doesn't even want to load?
Explorer doesn't load it.

Sounds like you may be running some draconian firewall or anti-spyware
software that is running amok. I'm not a browser expert. You need to get
the browser issue resolved before your email program can be fixed.

So I went on Symantec support and they did the removal for me. Restarted the
computer and it still does not connect, this is what I get:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'check', Account:
'pop.gmail.com', Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Sorry for bothering for a while, but this is very important for me.

You didn't address my previous response. Are you running a third party
firewall or anti-spyware software, such as Zone Alarm or SpywareBlaster?

I'm sorry, no I'm not.

One other thing you might try. Switch to a different Windows user login.
If you don't have a different user, create one in Control Panel, User Accounts.
Set up Windows Mail under that new user. Does it work there?

If not, my only remaining suggestion is to do a repair-install of Vista:

Considering the additional problem you are having with downloading
files in your browser, it points to some underlying corruption in Vista.

I just have a hard time connecting why Vista has to do with the issue if I've
just had this computer for 1 week, and if Windows Mail works my network at
school? It's all to complicated, I'llprobably switch to Apple (sigh). Thanks.

If you are not willing to try the alternate Windows user suggestion,
then the only other thing to do is a repair-install of Vista:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

If you have no other security software than the Symantec Norton software
which you uninstalled, I can only guess that Norton corrupted something
in Vista, and it didn't get fixed when Norton was uninstalled.
There is no doubt that a very small percentage of users run into severe
problems, and you just happened to be one of those unlucky ones.

If you were to monitor the Apple user groups for a while, you'll find
plenty of tales of woe there too.
