Can you recommend a web site where I can arrange to have a test email sent
to me so that I can see whether my software is screening the email
correctly? I would also like to test downloading an file off the internet
to see if that is being covered.
Have any of you done this before and will this cause any problems on my
computer? I just installed AVG 7.0 and wanted to make sure that it was
configured correctly.
Thanks in advance,
Carolyn

I downloaded the zip files and then scanned them with AVG. It was able to
identify a virus in both the zipped and double zipped files.
I also emailed one of the zip files to myself to see what would happen. It
came through just fine and I was able to open it without getting any warning
from AVG. Does this mean that the email scanner isn't working?

Don't trust the email scanning. Save all attachments to a convenient
folder, then in Windows Explorer, go that folder and right click on the
files to have them scanned.

I always do that anyway but since I am running a new version of AVG, I just
wanted to put it through a little test to see what happened.

I am suprised that AVG allowed you to send EICAR. AVG never let me send it.

This site will send e-Mail to check protection: http://www.gfi.com/emailsecuritytest/, my computer with AVG 7 passed all the tests.

It is possibly not configured correctly. If your email / news posting were
being scanned, you should have the AVG spam note at the bottom of all your
sent correspondence. Just like the one you see here at the bottom of this
message.

Gary, AVG 7 does not yet support NNTP - therfore the message (or scanning) will not occur when using it. I have been in contact with Grisoft with this response:
"Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email and information

The new group messages aren't certify by the new version of AVG7 yet. We prepare new version AVG7 that will include this protocol NNTP.

Best regards,

Robert Kapp

AVG Technical Support"

Hopefully soon!

I've been browsing computer NG's for a while, and I'm somewhat
embarrassed to ask this question, but what does AVG stand for? I'm assuming
AV means anti-virus, but which company is this? I already know about
McAfee, PC Cillin, and Norton.

Your question may already be answered. However the website
http://www.aleph-tec.com/eicar/index.php offers an email service that
send the EICAR virus test file to you via email. It will send it in
several "formats" i.e. ZIP and other compressed formats

Regards
RG
