Anti Virus Software

JoeP

Hi all,

I am looking for a very effective anti virus software. The price of the
software for me is not an issue. I would like the software to be pretty
automated but I am an experienced user so if the interface is not the most
friendly but it gets the job done the best then that is ok with me.
Something that scans windows very deeply and thoroughly and that can actualy
remove what ever it finds is what I'm looking for. I currently have McAfee
Enterprise edition and I just want to make sure that it did not miss
anything.

Any response is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Joe

I'm not sure you have to buy anything but I'd say that AVG 8.0, Avast
and NOD32 are the 3 top runners. The first 2 are freeware but good.
You can google all 3 of them.

Note: If you have a slower than normal PC or slow internet and use AVG,
disable the link scanner.

If price is not a concern, the best choice is clear to me: NOD32. It's
not expensive, but it's not free, as some of the other good choices
are.

I've been using Antivir for many years now and it is a free solution.
I've seen a lot of folks hailing Avast! or AVG as good but I don't
recommend those. I've disinfected computer that had Avast! and AVG on
them. NOD32 has high marks but it is not free.

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will responses.

I'll start by saying that I don't think any security "suite" is a
good choice. It'd be better to use smaller, less-resource-draining
stand-alone products. And, having had personal experience with
Verizon's business practices, I certainly wouldn't trust anything they
offer. Even if the product/service itself is fine, there'll be hidden
costs and "unadvertised" conditions and limitations associated with it.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all without
any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that. But it's
been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee products. Their
quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were acquired by
Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially
higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less
expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of
GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ). It proved
to be easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally,
I was pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable
improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec
product. Another free (for personal use) anti-virus product is AVAST! 4
Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html), which is what
I've used without problems on both WinXP Pro and Vista Business.

If You get really attack of virus or any other harmfull code the NOD32 is
no more protection for Your computer.
Nod32 can be infected itself and after that system can be deleted itself.
Kaspersky is only shure protection.

Antivir - care to explain how to use them? Thanks

Antivir is made by Avira. It's Antivirus. It's the product name.

That's your view. I won't argue with you about it, but I will simply
state that I (and *many* others) strongly disagree.

What is your rational for stating it is 'quite effective'? Do you normally
get viruses?

Huh? Did you even stop to think before asking that question? If my
chosen antivirus application is effective, then I clearly *don't* get
viruses, even though being occasionally exposed to them by others
sending me infected email attachments, on disks, etc.

I know the feeling, however I'm not all that expert in the computer security
thing either, but I've noticed that whatever software you choose to get
you're going to have to scan with it regularly and watch the sites you visit.
Otherwise, all kinds of stuff slip in anyway (Recently, after not scanning
for over a month, my computer picked up so many viruses, worms, and whatnot
that when I finally used Spyware Doctor on it, my computer wouldn't work
right and I ended up doing a full system restore which led to a problem I'll
be asking about shortly!). So much for "real-time protection!"
It's a good thing that money's no object with you. There are many
sites that will allow you to download antispyware for free, but usually the
catch is that only by purchasing the full version or upgrade will the program
actually get rid of the stuff it finds which means you'll have to do your own
debugging after the program finds out what's infected your computer and where.
That being said, I'm using a combination of Norton
AntiVirus(Symantec.com) & SpySweeper with Antivirus(Webroot.com) on one
computer, Spyware Doctor & Threatfire(both pctools.com) on another, and on
another Norton AntiVirus Corporate, Spyware Doctor, & Threatfire. The general
idea being that no one program does everything perfectly, so have more than
one and hope the strong points of one cover the weaknesses of the other.
Also, I've noticed that the Yahoo toolbar and the MSN toolbar carry free
anti-spyware buttons if you choose them.

Good theory, but the products you choose to use pretty much suck all the way
around.

Better list: Avast! Antivirus, SpywareBlaster, Spybot Search & Destroy
(WITHOUT Tea-Timer or SD Helper or Immunize -- just use it as an on-demand
scanner,) SuperAntiSpywere (used the same way), and AdAware.

All of the above are free to home users.

Yes, I thought a long time. I repeat, what is your rational for stating it
is quite effective? I.E. How do you know?

I have it install in my pc but don't seems to be able to use it. Been to
Avira website but did not say how to use it. Specifically I would like to use
the prog to scan a slave drive. Care to explain how I can go about, thanks
