Anti-Virus Software

I use Norton which seems to work very well in protecting my system except it
seems to slow down my processing and web browsing. I just saw an
advertisement for AVG anti-virus, ad-ware, spy-ware protection, etc. They
claim superior protection without system or browsing interference.

Anyone try it yet? Comments?

Thanks

*Many* people have been using AVG anti-virus for many years (its
antispyware is much newer). It's highly regarded by many people whose
opinion I respect. I've tried it, but have very little experience with
it recently. My personal preference is Avast!, which is also freeware.
Either is far better than Norton.

Turn off Automatic Updates (Control Panel/Symantec LiveUpdate/Automatic
LiveUpdate tab/Uncheck 'Use Automatic LiveUpdate')
I've found Automatic LiveUpdate slows down PC speed at random times even
though the Update Frequency default is every 240 minutes.

Once I did the above all was well and I now manually download updates daily.

I have AVG installed on four XP Pro machines and one Server 2003
computer. It's very fast scanning (< 20 min), doesn't use a lot of
memory or processes, and has daily updates. Very happy with it. I used
to use Norton, but AVG is FREE....except for the Server edition on
2003. I have a computer business, and install it on all the computers
I work on.

JJ,

I am not a fan of AVG because version 7 has a BHO & have always trusted Norton
products. No idea with AVAST like what the MVP talked about.

IMHO - you get what you pay for

On the Symantec site (http://www.symantec.com) you can view their K Base
articles which tell you how to change the lower performance issue you have.
Failing that, Symantec Live Help will also be a good idea if you're using Home
Products

Also, another user (JS) in this thread said that he removed Live Update... and
you can change the frequency yourself easily

most internet service
providers provide antivirals

and virtually all servers
in the u.s. scan for virus's
as well.

norton is not always the
best choice for some systems.

and if you try to uninstall it
it will likely won't uninstall
without taking some of your
o.s. with it.

something to keep in mind is that you
may not have the opportunity
to try new antivirals as long
as norton is installed.

While there is an option to change the frequency for some reason it does not
stick, the results (at least on my PC) is random attempts to update during
the day, which is why I turned it off.

I have been using Avast for years and liked it until........I recently came
up with a virus that was next to impossable to remove. Long story short
after installing Norton 2007 the virus was removed.

Gary,

Who cares about your opinion anyway? No-one, that's who. Its your opinion only

When is a Shell MVP qualified to talk about antivirus products anyway? What do
you use instead?

By the way: I don't use Norton Home Products, but Symantec Corporate Client
3.1.6.6010 Enterprise which is so much better than the home products. It's
highly recommended if you have the money & it comes with a proper server
install, force installation, firewall administrator which can push to any number
of clients...

One user (AMD GAMER) said in this thread that his system scans in less than 20
mins, but that would depend if he/she is scanning all or certain files, how many
files on the system too. I am sure he couldn't scan my development machine with
around 700, 000 files installed in less than 20 mins.

I have proved that some viruses Sophos, McCrappy, AVG... failed to pick up but
Norton on mouse over the infected files did. I also remember Hotmail using
McCrappy which was letting viruses through whereas Norton detected this threat
10 months before

So, maybe some users have bad opinions about Norton, but you will find as many
having the same doubts about the others too

Gary,

Did you read what MyName911 wrote?

AVAST couldn't get rid of it, but Norton did

You're an MVP. Of course you will stick together as there are safety in numbers.
Just doesn't mean you are right.

G

Gary S. Terhune

Exactly. You give a hearty recommendation to Norton based upon the corporate
edition which has no relationship to the consumer version -- and don't
bother to mention that delineation in a group that is primarily accessed by
the consumer market. Not the first time you've provided what I consider to
be deliberately misleading and incomplete answers and that bugs me.

G

Gary S. Terhune

Never said Avast is the be-all, end-all. No security app or suite is. Good
for Norton that they figured that one out before Avast. In fact, I don't say
that Norton is bad at detecting and removing viruses, etc. What I say is
that their consumer offerings consistently trash Windows systems.

Most coming here are inquiring about the home/personal version.
So if their Enterprise version is so good, What happened to Norton's
home version?

Caver1,

I answered a question in this group a few days ago & from the version number
supplied by the OP it shows it was the corporate edition

Its like I said you get what you pay for. Home Products are adequate for the
general user, but not for me. I just prefer to pay the money to get the proper
kit

N

Newbie Coder

Gary,

I have setup many PC's etc with all different versions of antivirus and I have
found Norton Firewall/Antivirus to be great. Yes you have to pay a subscription,
but there is a simple way around that if you know what you are doing. I am not
talking about hacking or anything illegal. Sure some have had AVG... & I have
also cleaned 100's of viruses off of many machines running the FREE AVG. Would I
recommend a product that missed all those viruses, trojans..? No way!!!

Many people have said for years that Norton slows the machine down. Its not only
due to its auto protect either, but on the Symantec K Base you will see the
resolution, but many won't go searching there they will come to a place like
here where they hear MVPs saying using AVAST/AVG instead which for me is also
off-topic when the OP asks about Norton & system performance

If the OP would have posted the exact product he/she are using then the help
would have been quicker to arrive

-----------

Its all down to opinion. You say you like AVAST, some like AVG which I don't
rate at all, no-one likes McCrappy (rightly so). I don't like Kapersky either,
but others may love

What I see a lot of in this newsgroup is one person likes something, another
reads so when a similar post comes up the person who reads the previous post
then gives an opinion which they have read & no experience of whatsoever & its
passed on. So, before you know it things like AVG have a good name & Norton have
a bad one. Its like a chain letter scenerio

If you don't like my posts then you don't have to read them. Not seen one of
yours helpful to an OP yet. Sorry, but its true
