Periods gone crazy

My wife's Sony Vaio laptop period key stopped working, then when logging on
anywhere where a field is available to enter data, all the periods show up.
I've loaded full versions of Spy Ware Detector, Spy Ware Doctor, CWShredder,
Yahoo Tool Bar Norton, Ad-Adware, Spy Bot, AVG, ETrust Anti-virus, all to no
avail (they did find and remove many items). eTrust keeps saying there is a
root directory issue, and Spy Doctor found what they called a virus as
hkey_users\.default\software\microsoft\systemcertificates\trustedpublishers\CRLs
, claria(?) perhaps, but it's still there after buying and/or loading all
above. Any ideas? Thanks.

What happens if you use an external keyboard?
