Slow startup on XP

I use XP Home on an AMD 3500+, 2Gb RAM PC. Been working fine for 6 months.
But lately the startup time has been very long. PC boots normally until
the XP splash screen appears with the blue bar moving across but it then
takes about 2 - 3 mins with the blue bar still moving before it finally
loads up the desktop. During this period there is no disc activity, but I'm
assuming with the blue bar moving the PC is still working ie its not hung .
Once its all loaded up the PC works fine and there are no signes its slower
than normal.

I've scanned with Ad Aware and Spy Bot, also checked for viruses I use AVG
free. Also removed anything unneeded from the startup in MSCONFIG.

I have other PC's in the house and they all start much faster even though
they are lower spec.

Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks
Andrew

Are there any clues in Event Viewer?
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

If the machine is on a network, do you have any drives mapped to network
resources that no longer exist?

Andrew,

Have you installed any new software lately? If so, that may be the culprit.

Try; Start>Run>msconfig (typed in the caption box)>Startup (tab at top)

See if anything in the list looks suspect or try disabling anything you
don't recognize and see if things improve.
