Temp Internet Files space problem

S

Simon Brown

Hi,

Im having trouble loading pages in my IE6 browser, on XPproSP2 pc, The
pages just aren't loading.
Ive been into the 'Settings' for the 'Temporary Internet Files' and
noticed that the 'amount of disk space to use' was 0.
This is obviously whats causing my trouble, but how do I rectify it?

When I try to change this I get an error message that reads " ! Please
select a value between 1 and 0 for how much disk space temporory
internet files may use." and an 'OK' button on the box, which just
closes the error box.
The 'slider' to adjust space moves but adjusts nothing. Likewise the
up/down arrows in the box only allows me to go to 10MB but when I click
OK or Apply the same error message appears.

I have deleted my Temp internet cache (history, cookies, files),
including any offline content.
I get no trouble when using another browser.
I have Mcafee AV, MS AntiSpyware and Adaware6 all of which are up to
date and have found nothing.

Any Ideas?

Even if the cache is seto to 0MB, that won't stop IE from working. In fact if you have
broadband, some will state that 0MB is fine. I personally believe that ~10MB is all that is
needed.

Ad-aware6 is discontinuned, no longer supported and no longer updated.

The latest version is Ad-aware SE v1.05 !

1) Download the following item...

Ad-aware SE v1.05
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

2) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
3) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
4) Using Ad-aware SE, perform a Full Scan of your platform and clean/delete
any parasites found.
5) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using Adaware
6) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
7) Reboot your PC.
8) Create a new Restore point

I also suggest BHOdemon to see if there are malware Browser Helper Objects
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

While I don't think this will work, the following just may help...

copy the below command line...
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" /rereg

Go to; Start --> run
paste the command line and execute it.

Finally, when you do fix the problem. Set the cache to ~10MB. That's all that's needed.

Problem is now SOLVED. Still unsure as to why/how it happened though.

For reference, this is how I did it:

-----------------------
1) Insert the Win XP CD

2) Open Start / Run and type:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

Press ENTER

That's great but you STILL have to dump d-aware6 and replace it with Ad-aware SE v1.05.

How did you come up with the command line...
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\ie.inf

Which makes me wonder if the following would have worked...
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" /rereg

My mistake I am using Adaware SE 1.05.
How did you come up with the command line...
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\ie.inf>

Looked up how to reinstall IE6 on XP, found that line mentioned on a few
sites
