What steps do I take to Temporally disable my anti-virus,
in order to download updated drivers ?

Start > run > msconfig > startup and uncheck the boxes that start your
anti-virus program, reboot and download the drivers. Then go back into
msconfig and re-check the boxes.

to be honest, never in all my years have i disabled AV when installing
updated anything.

I think it lends itself to bad practices. "here have a new driver.
reember to turn off AV though as it might detect it as a virus" Says the
virus writer

I wouldn't disable it until you actually install the
driver(s).

Download the driver(s), scan the the files, disconnect
from the Internet. Disable the scanner by right clicking
on the icon in the lower right corner or the task bar.
There should be an option to disable it.

If there isn't, re-boot into safe mode (F8 when the
computer is re-booting, select safe mode), then istall
the driver(s). Make sure to follow any instructions
included with the drivers before you install. (In some
cases its better to uninstall the older driver in the
add/remover programs first, than overwriting the files as
some older files might not be used).
