I doubt whether anyone can help with this but any
suggestions that are not completely obvious will be
gratefully received. I work in IT and have many years of
building configuring and deploying machines, so when a
friend asked me to take a look at her PC, I thought it
would be a simple 10 minute job to sort the problem out.
Unfortunately, here machine was in a permanent state of
blue screen so I decided to rebuild it. I installed XP-
Home edition, disabled the built in firewall and then
installed Norton Internet Security. Following this, I
connected to the internet and ran windows update. Having
installed the security patches, the machine repeatedly
crashed when running IE6 - no 60 second shutdown warning
(I had already overcome that problem) but simply blue
screening. The crashes only happen when internet explorer
is running. I subsequently rebuilt the machine two more
times. I then decided to take drastic action and lend my
friend a spare machine of my own. I installed windows
2000 from scratch and again, Norton Security etc. and
again ran windows update. Once more, following the
installation of the security patches, this new machine
with a completely different operating system repeatedly
crashes when running Internet Explorer. The error logs
contain and error which is total gibberish. The Microsoft
events website has nothing. I have tried removing
Internet Explorer on both machines and re-installing. I
am completely mystified and wonder if the problem lies
with one of the security patches. Any ideas ???

Cheers

On the WinXP machine (I assume it's SP1) disconnect from the Internet,
disable NIS and enable the WinXP firewall. Now try it.
