Internet explorer working from dllcache

Hi,

My computer crashed and then when I re-started the computer, internet
explorer and my profile was missing. I restored my profile through the
back-up I had, but internet explorer was still not working. When I click the
Internet Explorer icon in my desktop, the system displays the window asking
me "to choose the program you want to use to open the file". Then I tried to
locate the iexplore.exe in "Program Files/Internet Explorer" and there was
none. So I searched from iexplore.exe in my entire hard disk and I found one
at "C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\iexplore.exe". When I clicked on that,
internet explorer works fine. But the browser integration with outlook and
other office applications is not working.

I tried to re-install the internet explorer, but am not getting the
iexplore.exe in the program files even after repeated re-installing. To
re-install I modified the registry key "IsInstalled" for internet explorer
under Active-Setup using regedit and then installed the IE using the set-up
file downloaded for IE6.

I have XP with Service Pack 2 on my machine and the version of IE is version
6.0.2900.210.xpsp.051011-1528CO; SP1. I don’t want to install IE7.

How do I restore my internet explorer? I don't have the XP cd with me to
re-install the ServicePack 2. Can someone suggest the best approach to
restore internet explorer in my machine? Can someone let me know if it is
okay to run the internet explorer from dllcache?

Hi,
This may be as easy as...
Go to Add or remove programs> Add or remove Windows components> put a check
by IE. OK your way out. Restart." If Internet Explorer *is* checked, uncheck
it, restart, check it, restart.

You may also want to go into Display properties> Desktop> Customize to check
IE under Desktop icons. Or, if it is checked, uncheck, restart, check.

Hope this helps,
Don

I tried both the ways you had detailed. It does not solve my problem.

Is it okay to keep running the IE from dllcache?

Did you overlook this advice?

That should allow you to install the latest cumulative security update to IE
which would include an updated version of iexplore.exe among other things.
If you supposedly do have the latest IE update installed, with modules missing
I would be surprised that AU wouldn't try to reinstall it for you. Do you have AU
enabled or disabled? In any case uninstalling the latest cumulative security
update involving IE would have the effect of reinstalling an earlier version of IE.
Then you could reinstall that update (or the latest one) and thereby replace
all of the updated modules, including iexplore.exe.

I don't think that is enough detail to know what your post XPsp2
maintenance level is. You could try running MBSA to see what it thinks.

Otherwise try running: msinfo32.exe /category IEFileVersions
to get an inventory of your IE modules and versions
