TCP/IP network transport is not installed

Giovanni Neri

I have two ACER laptops (220 and 800) both with Windows XP
professional (all possible updates installed) and I am
experiencing a very nasty situation. When installing new
USB or PCMCIA devices (for instance a Logitech USB camera
or a US Robotics Wi-Fi card) upon systems reset and
restart the following warning message is displayed (grey
box with red OK circle)

TCP/IP network transport is not installed

with all obvious related problems. Please notice that the
drivers used are original and the most recent available
(downloaded from Internet) and that if the OS is
reinstalled from scratch (NOT a reinstallation over the
previous installation !) with the devices inserted no
problems arise. A suggestion was made by Ivan Sheng of
resetting the TCP/IP protocol (see How to Reset Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP WGID:358 ID: 299357
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357) to no avail. Has
anybody an idea of what can be done ?

Hi Giovanni,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicated you received the following
error message when installing new USB or PCMCIA devices

TCP/IP network transport is not installed

Based on our further research and tesing, this issue is caused by the
Winsocks services could not start because of the incompatibility with
McAfee Firewall.

To resolve this issue, uninstall the McAfee Firewall software from
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Using the "disable" feature in the
McAfee software didn't resolve this issue based on our research and
testing. Therefore, we need to uninstall McAfee completely from Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.

If you have other firewall or similar antivirus, Internet security software
installed, please also disabel or uninstall them. They may cause similar
issue.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear or if there is anything further we can help you with
from our side, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry Qian
