"TCP/IP transport protocol is not installed"

TonyS

I use wireless modem that is attached to a DSL router at
my house.

I tried to setup a Dial-up connection in order to access
the Internet when I was away from home.

After going through the Internet/Network Connection
Wizard, the Dialup connection appeared on my desktop.

Subsequently opening IE6 to access the web gave me an
immediate error. Outlook Express, the same way.

They both now shut down without being able to access the
Net.

I tried rebooting the computer and when Windows XP Pro
(SP2) opens, it now says, "TCP/IP transport protocol is
not installed."

I can't ping or anything, even though I've deleted the
dialup connection and can see that my wireless connection
is active.

I've tried resetting TCP/IP using the NETSH commands as
you cannot uninstall TCP/IP in Windows XP Pro. NICE
FEATURE MICROSOFT!

I've tried everything but a complete install. Any
suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You might try these steps

I have traced several of these problems to improperly configured winsock
LSPs. Run "winmsd" and go to Components/Network/Protocol. Look at the
names in the list, anything with "MSAFD" in it or the "RSVP xxx Service
Provider" should be fine. Anything else is suspect, and uninstalling the
owning program might help.
If that fails or your provider list is empty, you may need to rebuild the
catalog from scratch. The following instructions will rebuild your catalog
for TCP/IP. If you are using any other transports (If you don't know, then
you probably aren't) then you will have to reinstall them as well.

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot
3. Go to the network connections folder, right click the icon for your
network connection, and select properties.
4. Click install, choose "protocol", and click "add..."
5. Click "Have Disk...", enter "\windows\inf", click OK
6. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click OK
7. When the process in complete, reboot

I was having a similar problem, and went through all the
steps everywhere that I could find to deal with it. I
wasted most of the weekend messing around with settings,
files, ipconfig, netsh, clean boots, buying a new
ethernet card, even reinstalling Windows. Your one post
fixed my problem. I had 2 new.net files in the list.
Once I followed your steps, poof, all better.

I can't thank you enough!
