taskbar buttons not appearing

When I minimize running programs, taskbar buttons no longer appear for them
on the taskbar. I tried to resolve by working with the taskbar settings --
but could not find a way for them to reappear. I could add/remove other
toolbars onto the taskbar but not retrieve the typical buttons. I was able
to correct by restoring by settings to an earlier time. But this was only a
temporary (1 day) fix. The taskbar buttons will not appear again and my
computer will not restore to any restore point.

Thanks for any help.
