taskbar and wmp

I am having a strange problem with my taskbar. It is
totally gone and I can't find a way to get it to show
up. It is not on auto hide and locking the taskbar has
no effect. I have selected the option to have the
taskbar always on top. The only time I can see and use
the task bar is if I have windows media player open and
minimized, the the task bar magically appears. Otherwise
if I move the mouse to the bottom of the screen I get the
drag arrows like the task bar is hidden, but I can't drag
it open. I am not sure if this is a software conflict or
If I have some sort of virus. My last scan came up
negative. This part of the problem has been fairly
recent. My first taskbar problem started right after I
upgraded WMP. I noticed that I couldn't see any of the
programs I had opened in my task bar. The other day I
put my taskbar on auto hide, and it just disappeared
completely. Let me know if anyone out there has had the
same problem or has any suggestions. I have spent
considerable time playing with settings and am pretty
frustrated at this point. any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi Sam,

I had that problem when I first upgraded to XP. I called
the tech support and they told me it could be a number of
things, but only one of their options did infact work.

You should first try using system restore, go back to a
date that you know it was working. If that doesn't work
try restarting. Right after the BIOS Screen goes away
and the Win XP logo appears, hold in F8, it should pop up
a list of options, pick last know good configuration.

Last but not least, if that doesn't work, you will have
to make a new user name like I had to. To do this go to
the control panel and pick "User Accounts". Pick create a
new account, make sure the name is a new name, not the
one you use now. When all is done, restart the pc then
navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\ Open the
username folder that you cannot see the taskbar on and
select everything.., than right click and pick copy, or
ctrl+c.

Go back to C:\Documents and Settings\ and open the folder
of the new username you just created and press ctrl+v or
right click and pick paste. Say yes to all if any dialog
boxes pop up. Now all of your settings should be
transfered to your new username. Now you can go back to
the control panel, and go to user accounts and delete
your old account. However, I suggest logging into your
brand new account and making sure it has all transfered
first before going through with deleting it, and you may
want to pick keep files, when deleting the user, just
incase you don't feel 100% safe. Hope that helps.

Best of luck,
Paul
