Unwanted new icon in taskbar

Windows XP, auto updates current through 11/10/09.

I have a new item in my taskbar. I've no idea how it got there, do not like
it occupying real estate on my screen, and want to remove it..

I have my taskbar as the minimum blue bar along the bottom of the screen.
The new annoyance is the word Desktop, and to the right are two little
arrows. If I click on them, they open my desktop. I never do this and never
want to. I want the word and the arrows gone.

Thanks in advance for any advice and help.
