Disappearing Taskbar

N

news.microsoft.com

In windows xp home edition, SP3 + all updates, my taskbar is disappearing in
every session, sometimes accompanied by the 'Windows must close
explorer.exe' message. It's not hiding, it's locked, but away it goes, and
doesn't return until at least a logoff / logon.

I've searched 'disappearing taskbar', 'taskbar disappears', 'restarting
taskbar', 'taskbar problems', and found zip.

Has anyone seen this before? Better yet, is there a fix?

I've seen this if you ran Ubuntu Live on your system which has Windows
XP on it. Did you do this?

Scan first, then fix:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

These can be uninstalled later if desired.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Hi Bill, this is Bill (changed, somehow, to Britt)

No, I had been considering it, and have the CD, but I've not used it yet.

Hola, Jose,

I will check these out. I do have KellysKorners TaskBar Fixer, but I still
have to use it about once a session.

Thank you,

Britt

I have the McAfee suite that's free to Comcast users. McAfee highly
suggested turning off Adaware, SpyBot S&D, and most others, as they mess up
McAfee, which appears to be true advice, at least as far as fixing McAfee
errors, because I haven't had any since then. The suite includes a firewall.

This was a Vista machine when I bought it, but it crashed irretrieveably 2
weeks later, so I reformated and Installed XP from a slipstreamed SP3
version, originally retail.

Thanks,

Britt
