Task Manager

I try to open Task Manager by right clicking at the bottom. It opens
momentarily and then close. It happens on every click. So I tried to go
into
windows directory where taskman.exe is. I clicked on it. It does not
open..probably for a fraction of a second for eye to detect.

How do I solve this dilemma? is it XP problem or am I having virus?

Greetings --

This behavior is a common symptom of more than one virus/worm, the
three below being the most common:

W32.Yaha

you may well have a virus. if so, you'll probably find that start, run,
regedit, and start, run, msconfig, don't work either - most viruses that
nail TM also get these other handy utilities (and many of the more
common virus scanners too).

I tried your suggestion at this link :
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Some question pops up about the instructions from Symantec. I am not able
to do step #2 updating the virus definitions because they say I dont have
the norton utility. I did not buy any. Step #4 says I should do full scan.
How? with what utility? With the same Symantec product that needs to be
purchased? Please explain. I am real helpless.

The next possible alternative:

I want to do like copying address book (a long list) from outlook express..
and favorites from Explorer.. a long list. Can i copy them to a disk or
floppy and then format the whole hard disk and reinstall XP. And then put
the address book and favorites back. What is your suggestion/recommendation?

1.. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
2.. Update the virus definitions.
3.. Restart the computer in Safe mode.
4.. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as
W32.Spybot.Worm.
5.. Delete the value that was added to the registry.
6.. Delete any zero-byte files in the startup folder

Do u mean Export and Import of Explorer? I just checked and now see what you
mean. I did not know that simple. I definitely appreciate your quick reply
and also I will use it alot! Would export be able to save all Outlook
Express letters? Filename? I dont think the latter is possible.

I have already purchased AVG from grisoft and is up and running. But it did
not solve TASK MANAGER problem.. I have already wrote letter to grisoft tech
support service this early am..

Do u mean the virus can nail common virus scanners, too? including AVG that

Bruce,

I was at that link for spybot.worm.. I dont think I can download the file
and do system scan on my pc. I think I have to buy Symantec, first.
Unfortuantely, I already purchased AVG anti virus yesterday but it wont
solve the Task Manager problem at all. I have written letter today to
Grsisoft techsupport about it.

No messages are different. If Outlook is installed you can export OE to
Outlook only. But OE can import it's own files. Tools - Options -
Maintenance - Store Folder and save this folder then File - Import - the
folder 9few other question in the wizard.

Practise before you do anything.

Import OE letters would export to OUTLook only.. I need to export this
folder to floppy or CD. But this is not possible. It appears I cannot copy
the folder where OE letters reside, for example floppy or CD for later
upload after XP is clean. (formatted)

Not sure about AVG, but yes these smart viruses try to stop AV activity
as well as tools like TM, Regedit, Msconfig, etc. Basically anything
they know to be dangerous is on their 'kill on sight' list.

Running the scanners in safe mode sometimes works. Running an 'online'
scan over the internet (something like 'house call') also works ..
except some of the smarter ones won't let you connect to known AV
websites either.

I see again what you mean. I will copy the folder to disk or CD, but it
wont be readable without OE. But I can paste it back into OE later when XP
is clean. I think it is what you are suggesting.

Looks like it is the virus with three Minds in a can. I only have one.
Real nuisance! I better do something about it. Probably HOUSECALL can detect
it like AVG, but it is not able to repair it. It is not clear why; it does
not explain except one virus still remains on the hard drive. no explanation
from AVG.

Try Stinger - it gets most of these smart viruses:

the price is right too (although note that it is not supported).

Copy the folder, use Import to import the folder. You can paste them over,
but thats for experts only (and it's fiddly and time consuming and I'd have
to write an monograph describing how).

There are two normal ways. One is to import and the second is to tell OE to
use the old folder (after you copied it to disk).

You know the first way and the second is Tools - Options - Maintenance -
Store Folder - Change and move it to the folder you've copied from the old
computer. OE will say "There appears to be an OE message store in this new
folder - Do I delete it or use it" Read it careully and choose whichever
means use.

If you choose to import then I'd delete everything in the existing OE's
folder. This will undo your paste. SAssuming you only have a handfull of
messages in your new XP drag them to your desktop (and afterwards drag them
back into their OE folder - Sent Items or whereever). Then start OE and
Inbox etc should be recreated, then Import.

You can only delete or copy an OE store folder if OE is not running at that
time.
