My daughter got a virus in AIM. Coincidentally, or because
of the virus, we don't know, you could no longer run TASK
MANAGER. It starts up, but terminates in about 2 seconds.
We got rid of the virus with a system restore, but the
problem with taskman.exe is still there. I even copied
another version from her brothers computer. Any clues?

Run a virus scan. If it was a memory resident virus you
did not get rid of it doing a restore. System Restore is
not a good way to get rid of a virus. If your virus
scanner is out of date go to www.antivirus.com and run a
free scan. Update your virus scanner and make sure it
stays current. It's getting dangerous out here on the
Internet.

Hi,

You are not clean of the virus yet, system restore does not always resolve
this. While you start doing a clean up, use the emergency tools described by
MVP Doug Knox here:

Thanks guys...I should have added that I do have Norton
AntiVirus and did a scan first and deleted 4 files that
went into quarantine. The symptoms of the virus (it tried
to get us to log into AIM) were gone, but the problem with
Task Manager remained.

System restore is NOT a virus remover.

Hi George,

Boot into Safe mode and run a full system scan with Nortons (make sure it is
fully up to date first). System Restore doesn't remove viruses, and the
symptom you are experiencing is a clear indication that the infection still
exists. Many (actually most) AV programs are functionally useless in normal
mode once infection occurs. You need to get to Safe4 mode at a minimum to
get a handle on the cleanup.
