Task bar properties notification area

I can no longer customize the icons. When I click the drop down arrow to
select "Never Show" or another change, nothing happens. I don't get the
dropdown menu enabling me to select a different display of any of the icons.

Windows XP Service Pack 3

Any fix?

Thanks, Steve L.

Control Panel > Taskbar and Start Menu > Taskbar tab > checkmark in
'Hide inactive icons' then click the Customize button

Note: You will only see the 'unhide' icon when you have inactive icons
that are hidden.

Thanks but that no longer works. When I click on an Item it turns blue also
then showing the down carrot. Then, until now I wouuld click on the down
carrot and a menu would appread allowing me to change the notification to
Always Show, Never Show, or Show when active. I'm not sure of the wording
because it won't work now so I can check it. When I clik the down carrot
nothing happens - I don't get the drop down menu showing those selections.
The only thing that hapopens when I click the down carrot is that the blue
disappears.

Your 'Display Properties' Theme may have changed, so when you click the drop down arrow
nothing seems to happen.

1. Right-click on the Desktop and select Properties.
2. On the 'Theme' tab click on the 'Save As...' button and
save your current theme as a backup, then either select
another theme or try the following:

3. Select the 'Appearance' tab.
4. Under 'Font size:' select 'Normal'.
5. If it's already 'Normal' then change it to 'Large Fonts'
and 'Apply' then change it again to 'Normal' and 'Apply'.
6. Log-off or restart.

Thank you. Your first suggestion worked (Theme). My settings are retained
after I go back to my original theme. However, once back to the original
theme I cannot change the settings from there. If I want new notification
area settings I have to go back to a different theme to do it. Not a big
problem.

Your welcome, Steve.

I remember now what was responsible for that problem on my machine. It was the 'Active
Title Bar' size. Reducing it corrected the 'Notification Area' problem. Try it, or you
could create a new theme.

Pick an existing theme under the Display Properties Appearance tab. Click on the
'Advanced' button and start playing with the values.
Save with a new name. I name mine MyTheme_96_Calibri, MyTheme_120_Segoe etc.

Thank you again. I did just recently change the size of the Title bar. I
never would have thought of Desktop Themes as having anything to do with my
problem, so I do appreciate your help.

You hit it right on. I had changed my Title Bar size such that both the time
and the day of week showed. Reducing it so only the times shows corrects the
Icon notification problem. Thank you again.

It took me a few months to figure out that bug, and all by myself, so I really appreciate
your thank you.

So thank you for the thank you!
