notification area (task bar)

The icons for programs that are running are not showing
up in the "notification area" near the clock. It doesn't
make any difference if I remove the check mark from
the "Hide Inactive Icons" selection in Task Bar
properties. I know that the programs are running, I can
see that in Task Manager, what am I missing?
I am new to XP and don't know all the tricks yet.
Thanks

I am having this same problem with a win XP Pro laptop.
Sometimes when I boot it shows all/most of the icons in
the systray (notification area) usually only the network,
norton and my firewall (norton). I really miss having my
battery show there so I can see how much time I have left
on this charge. The icons show up in "past items" on the
tool bar properties.

Here's what I did to fix it.
Open regedit and go to
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer
find EnableAutoTray, double click it and change the 1 to
a 0.
Log off and then back on and it's fixed.
