invisible notification of running programs

Somehow, I can not see anymore notification of running
tasks such as word, excell or just any other application
on the task bar. I have tried all I know, including the
selection of notification area "Hide inactive icons"
customization.
As this is a dangerous situation in case somebody
succeeds to run a program in the backgroung without
knowing about it, I'd appreciate advice how to correct
the problem, without running my full image disk.
