notification area problems!

Hello. I am having problems with my notification area.
My arrow has disappeared that allows me to see inactive
icons. Also, programs that are no longer on my computer
are still being displayed in the property area but with
icons of other active icons.
How do I restore the arrow and delete unneeded icons?????
Any assistance would be greatly welcomed.
