Systray Icon Issues.

Dear All,

Weird one here, when I first boot up the machine, I don't have the Network
Icon,Volume Icon or the Safely Remove Hardware Icon, I go to the Sound
Properties and re-tick the display vol icon and all three re-appear??

Why are they dissapearing after a reboot?

Regards
Paul.

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the changes from "sticking." These include
anti-spyware applications (e.g., Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, WinPatrol, etc),
anti-virus applications & security suites (Norton, McAfee, ESET/NOD32,
Kasperky, Trend Micro, etc.), and third-party firewalls (e.g., Zone Alarm,
etc.).

Note that temporarily disabling the application(s) or rebooting into Safe
Mode may not disable the application's system protections.

Kardon,

START | RUN | Type 'regedit' (no quotes) & press ENTER

Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\LocalSettings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

In the right pane delete:

IconStreams
PastIconsStream

Exit the registry editor

Restart 'Explorer.exe'. To do this:

Right-click the Taskbar & click TASK MANAGER

On the prosses tab highlight 'explorer.exe' & click END TASK

On the APPLICATIONS tab click NEW TASK, type 'explorer' (no quotes) & Press
ENTER

-------------

You can also check these keys in the registry by opening the registry editor
as above:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane set to 0 (zero)

HideSCAVolume
HideSCANetwork
HideClock
....

If any are set to 1 (one) then double-click that entry & change to 0 (zero)

Restart Explorer or simplier is restart XP

Awaiting your reply,

PA Bear,

If that was the case then the OP would get a warning when he/she added them
back because they would be hooking the system tray...

Whilst the IconStreams and PastIconStream was deleted, the other Registry
settings (HideSCAVolume, HideSCANetwork & HideClock ) weren't there (within
my Registry), but still after a restart, I still don't have my Vol, Network
or Safetly Remove until I re-tick the Volume show within the Control Panel..
(Then the other two appear along side), Also doing a simple EndTask of
Explorer and restarting it doesn't help either, after restarting explorer
the Control Panel, Volume Tick has gone back to 'unTicked' ?

Regards
Paul.

Paul,

The entries given in my last post would only be present if someone set the
GPO's. You can still have XP Home & those entries as you can add them
manually to the registry

The only other thing is registry permissions because that wouldn't allow the
entries to be held in the registry

It doesn't sound like anything suspicious as there is no benefit for
removing those items. Will look into it further

Have you done malware scans yet? It is always a good place to start
when thing don't seem to work right.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

As near as I can recall, that registry manipulation is the correct
method for "cleaning up" the Past Items list in the Notification area
section... not to make misbehaving icons appear. It does work for the
clean up though and the registry entries will be recreated when
explorer is started again as demonstrate.

The original problem remains.

Once you tick the Place volume icon in the taskbar box, does it stay
ticked when you reboot or do you have to do it again (does it uncheck
itself)?

If you see a circle with a < in it to the the left of the System
Clock, that indicates hidden icons. If you click the < all the icons
should display for a period of time (depends on other things we can
talk about later).

If you click the <, do you see the hiding icons and then the disappear
or are they just completely missing?

Right click the Taskbar, Properties, Notification area, Customize.
Locate the icon(s) of interest and change the behavior according to
your desires. Always show, Always hide, Hide when inactive, then OK,
OK... I have everything set to Hide when inactive since I suffer
from LCT - low clutter tolerance.

How does that adjustment work for you?

Guys,

It ain't a Malware/Spyware/Virus issue as I've scanned with various things..

It ain't a 'Hidden' issue, as I know about that.

the Control Panel/Sound/VolumeIcon settings keeps unticking itself when I
reboot the machine, and when it is re-ticked and applied, the other two
icons re-appear along side the volume one.

If you were to read back though the very long list of posts in this group, you would
see that disappearing icons in the 'System Tray' (Notification Area) is a recurring
theme.

There is no explanation for this that I've ever come across.

My personal answer is to move the mouse over the system tray while my profile is
loading and the icons appear one by one.

Waving the mouse over the area [seems] to have a positive effect, though, sometimes
some don't appear even so.

It's just one of the [many] quirks that Windows XP has...

So now... is the proper statement of the problem:

The "Place volume icon in the taskbar" check box clears itself on a
reboot.

It would appear so, yes... and I'm guessing the other two icons are linked
in someway..

Add this registry value to have your settings remembered:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

If the ju.c idea doesn't work,

Here is where I am reading. Not all applies:

http://www.tech-pro.net/howto_013.html

Are you set up to login automatically with XP starts?

Can you change that temporarily to require you to login and see if the
problem is still there? You don't want to have to leave it that way
of course, but I am narrowing...

If you will never have to install a USB device from a network
resource, unregister the Universal PNP devices (a shortcut for their
method from Microsoft):

regsvr32 /u upnpui.dll

If something quits working, put it back:

regsvr32 upnpui.dll

I lost interest at the mention of installing a third party utility.

I've tried that ju.c suggested, I've tried the link and it's contents and
still nothing...

Hmmmmmm...

Maybe it is my machine telling me I need to do a nice clean re-install??

It is hard for me to troubleshoot a problem I don't have and can't
even inflict upon myself on purpose.

I don't like guessing or "trying" things. I would rather figure it
out.

I will look around some more. It is apparently quite obscure...
