Maybe it is just hiding (hidden).

If you see a circle with a < in it to the left of your clock, click
the < to display the hidden icons.

If you see it, we can tell you how to unhide it.

Try checking Device Manager and see if the audio driver is disabled or
working properly.

The volume icon won't show if your audio device is disabled or not
functioning properly in Device Manager.

You might want to update your audio driver.

If you need help with that, you need to provide information on what hardware
you're using, make/model of the computer.

Exactly what updates?

Did you try this:
In your Sounds and Audio Devices Properties
on your Volume tab:
UN-check "Place volume icon in the taskbar"
click "Apply"
CHECK "Place volume icon in the taskbar"
click "OK"

If that doesn't work, here's Tae Song's suggestion again:

Sound device seems to work properly.

My "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked. When I uncheck it then
apply then check it then apply and OK - it will place icon in taskbar but
when I restart my pc it will not place icon in taskbar again.

If I log off and log on volume icon is shown in taskbar (but this is not
good solution to log off/on every time).

And Last installed updates: KB 969898, 968537, 961501, 970238 and for IE8 KB
969897.

You said you tried to find a solution via Google - but they are all
outdated. You realize you are using Windows XP - itself outdated in many
ways. ;-) The solution that worked in 2001/2002 for XP often still work.
That's why I gave the google search I did - lots of times (especially given
your newly divulged information about the volume icon being there at a
reboot) the old fixes are still the right ones.

My first suggestion... Download and install the latest driver for your
audio device. I don't care that you have sound or not - so what if the
driver works that far. My car might drive down the road, but my electric
windows might not work; more accurately my stereo might work fine - but i
can only play it at one volume easily because the knob is gone and I have to
break out the pliers to turn it up/down. Get the latest driver for whatever
sound device is installed in your system straight from the hardware
manufacturer and install it. No matter what else you do - install the
latest driver from the hardware manufacturer.

Second suggestion - after you do the first...

Click Start --> Run --> Type or paste
mmsys.cpl
--> Click OK

Under the "Volume" tab in the "Device Volume" section, put a check in the
box
that reads, "Place volume icon in the taskbar" --> Click OK.

If it is checked already - uncheck it --> click apply --> check it --> click
OK.

Click Start --> Run --> Type or paste
regsvr32 stobject.dll
--> Click OK

A message should popup saying that stobject.dll registered.

NEXT -->

Go here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Scroll down to:
320. Restore Volume/Net Icon to Notification Area

Right click on "Restore Volume/Net Icon to Notification Area"
and click "Save Target As". The "Save As" dialog should open.

Click on the "Desktop" icon on the left to save "netvol.reg"
to your desktop. Click on the "Save" button.

Locate "netvol.reg" on your Desktop, double click "netvol.reg"
and click Yes to the import prompt.

"netvol.reg" can be deleted after everything is fixed.

NEXT -->

Make sure Always show is enabled for Volume in Taskbar Properties.

Right click the Taskbar --> Properties --> Taskbar tab
--> Customize button --> Click on Volume --> Click the 'down arrow'
to display the choices --> Click on Always show --> Click OK
--> Click Apply --> Click OK.

Reboot.

Come back - let everyone know if that worked for you.

Hi Shenan,

thank you for your very nice step by step solution.
In the mean time I found here on the forum another solution:
go to My Network Places, and click on "Hide icons for networked UPnP devices".

It seems it works for me (Volume icon is back in taskbar after restart). I
try to restart my pc many times and if problem remains I will try your step
by step instructions.

Thank you for your time and help.

Best regards,
Mia
