Some System Tray Icons Missing

J

Juan C. Reyes

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home w/SP2 and all updates (after
reformatting
my HDD). The last application installed was Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet
Security 2005. Now, when I restart my computer, only a limited number of
icons
show up in my system tray. Several are missing (although Task Manager
confirms
they are running). If I load another program after startup is complete,it
appears in the systray as normal. Also, the icon to control volume is
missing,
and I can only restore it by going to Sound in the control panel, unchecking
"Place volume icon in taskbar" and clicking Apply, and then rechecking it
and
clicking Apply again.

The system is a clean install, and I have verified that there are no viruses
or
spyware. There appears to be no performance problems at all; simply, the
icons
are missing from the systray.

Thank you for any recommendations.

This problem plagues many XP users, but there's still no actual fix from
Microsoft.

There are many things you can try, but this worked for me:
Delete all files from "C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch" and reboot...it's that simple.

Post something back here if that doesn't work....

Hi,

Icons are missing or disappear, reappear: This happens for most Auto-Logon
users.

Methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account
or disable SSDP and uPNP Services.

Thank you for the suggestions. After seeing numerous posts (via Google) on
disabling uPNP Services, I decided to try this option first. It worked! My
icons are back.

Thanks. Juan
