"System Standby Failed"

I am running windows XP on a Dell Computer. Things have
worked fine until I recently installed some new software -
namely Matlab (release 13), Turbo Tax Deluxe 2003, and
Quicken 2004. I now get an error message stating

"System Standby Failed - The device driver for
the 'Communications Port (COM1) is preventing the machine
from entering standby."

I have tried disabling the COM1 port but then I get an
error message for a different driver. I have also
uninstalled all of the above programs, but the problem
persists. Quicken claims that while Quicken 2003 did
cause this problem, Quicken 2004 does not.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem that prevents
the computer from going into a standby mode?
