Standby Start Problem

After 3 years with my present PC ( XP Home) I find the need to use the Stanby
function of Windows. However upon enabling Standby I receive the message:
"System Standby Failed" with the further specification that 'Communication
Port (COM1)' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. 1)I have
nothing attached to COM1, 2)I have no other Applications running that I can
see, 3) the COM1 port drivers are provided by MS and I believe current. I
have looked at other posts and find nothing similar. or so I think. Can
anyone provide a possible cause? Thanks, Jason Sachs.

I'm not sure of the exact
resolution.

But could it be possible that
your power management console indicates
a ups/back power supply?

Some back up power packs have
a serial cable (com) used by window
to monitor the state of the emergency power.

go to start and run: Powercfg.cpl

I have reviewed and tried all the advice; I have come to the conclusion that the message from the system means what it says. Some application has or is requesting or reserving the use of COM1 making Standby/Hibernation impossible. Does anyone know were such a reservation would be stored in the computer (Registry? and where within it?) or where can I find the name of the application? Thanks, Jason Sachs.
