Can't put computer in standby Windows XP Professional

When trying to put my computer in standby I get the
following message:
SYSTEM STANDBY FAILED: The device driver for
the 'Communications Port (COM1)' device is preventing the
machine from entering standyby. Please close all
applications and try again. If the problem persists, you
may need to update this driver.

There is no updated driver.
When I turn of the COM port the error changes to 'Modem"
instead of com port.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
