system restore

All documents saved with wordpad and notepad are now written in gobblegook
however if document sent in email it is fine. Thought System Restore may help
but have tried hundreds of restore points all which have been unsucessfull.
Have Windows XP and also Norton 2009 installed. Have tried disableing Norton
but no difference.
What is preventing System Restore from working?

system restore doesn't work
on user files, ie docs, pics, etc.

copy the files onto a cd or dvd
or usb and see if another computer
can read them.

also, try booting in the safemodes
and see if they are readiable from
there.

Some common viruses did this (about 10 years ago). Until
you have diagnosed the cause, be sure not to alter the
source files, whatever they contain. (You can view them
in hex.) I.e. copy the source files to a folder of their own,
and do your experiments only on the copies.

Have you /purchased/ "Norton 2009" (whatever that is)? What anti-virus
application was installed before you installed "Norton 2009"?
