System Restore Problems

Don

I am running Windows XP (SP3) Home Edition on my desktop and XP (SP3)
Professional on my laptop. Since both systems are running slow, and I've done
all the housekeeping I know of (defrag, disc cleanup, erase temporary
internet files/cookies, run System Mechanic, run Norton Internet Security
2009, and eliminated unneeded startup programs).I ran System Restore on each
computer. I tried different several restore points, and in each case, it
wouldn't restore to the selected dates. Is that indicative of a problem
related to the slow operation? Any suggestions?

Personally, once System Restore is inoperative, I wipe clean the HDD (after
backing up the work) and reinstall - but then I like to do that every 6
months or so anyways - could it be OCD?

Norton products (at least through 2008) are known to cause problems with
System Restore because of "Symantec Resource Protection."

An excellent source of information about System Restore in XP and Vista:
http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html

And with respect to your particular problem:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html
(The link says "Norton 2006-2007" but the content has been updated
through 2008. The situation with your 2009 product should be similar.)

Norton is likely causing your problem.
Replace Norton with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender. Disabling Norton is not enough. You need to completely uninstall
it. If it doesn't solve the problem, get rid of Norton anyway. Norton is
known to cause many problems which don’t always appear immediately.
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool.
