System restore incomplete

Cangirl

Hi,

I am using Windows XP and my Lenovo R61 laptop is about a year old. When I
open browsers, they tend to freeze so I wanted to do a system restore.
However, I keep getting this 'Restoration Incomplete' message.

The computer cannot be restored to:
April 30, 2009
Software Distribution 3.0

No changes have been made to your computer.
To choose another restore point start system restore.

I've also tried several different restoration dates and they all give the
same message. This is the first time I've tried system restore on this
laptop, but I use it a lot on my PC so if there's only problem we can focus
on I'd rather it be this than the freezing browsers.

Thanks!!!

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting to
this newsgroup.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Hey,

I had Norton for a 3 month trial that has been expired since October, but
that's all in terms of protective software. I have ThinkVintage Active
Protection, but that's supposed to only protect the computer from physical
shocks. The Windows XP is the 2002 version and its service pack is 3.0.

Thanks

Your computer is having unprotected sex with the internet. Having done so
since October it likely has some form of a STD now.

Install a good antivirus program and some good anti malware programs and
update them and run them.

You will be surprised at what is already on your computer.

Why do you believe a system restore would fix your freezing browsers?

I see from another post you have Windows XP with SP3. What version - Home,
Professional, Media Center, Tablet PC, etc? More than likely you will bnot
be able to utilize any current restore points - so that's probably a dead
deal. However - feel free to peruse one of the best web sites on the
Internet for such things - specific to the System Restore in Windows...

Backup your personal data, then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

cf. http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

Singapore Computer Service

Hello,

If you can post the browser name and version, we can help you fix the
freezing issue rather than doing a system restore, which can override
configuration changes and software installations you have done from the date
you restored from.

Otherwise, try restoring in safe mode command prompt instead.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449 ( How to start the System Restore
tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP)
for a detailed guide on this.

The Browser I'm using is Internet Explorer, though I'm not sure what version
it is. How would I find that out? Thanks

Also, I did try to do system restore in safe mode. Since the mouse becomes
inactive in safe mode, I only got as far as opening the actual calender from
which you choose the restore date. After that I couldn't go back and forth
between the days on the calender, nor between the months. I tried using the
arrows but it wouldn't work. Is there another command I'm supposed to be
using to go through days and months? Thanks again!

Did you complete these scans? You really should start here:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.
