obviously there are
some variables involved.

firstly, there must have been
a problem with the o.s. that
encouraged you to attempt
a restore.

secondly, the attempt to
restore failed as well.

my suggestion is to use
your windows cd and
repair your operating system.

it will repair any damaged or
corrupted system files and then
create a fresh new restore point.

here are the instructions:

Have you tried an earlier System Checkpoint, or do they all behave the same
way?

Are you logged in as an Administrator?

Do you have enough disk space available to process the restore point?

Do you have external devices attached when you are attempting this
operation?

Is your computer infested with a Norton/Symantec product? These
crapware items are known to cause problems with System Restore as well
as the many other bad things they do to computers.

MVP Bert Kinney has a page with the details of the Norton/Symantec
issues and how to resolve them on his System Restore web site at
http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html

Good luck

Don't bother. Disable System Restore.

It's a waste of HD space and of computer ressources. In fact disable
all the useless stuff that Microsoft has running in the background.
Set up Windows Updates to notify you before downloading or installing
anything. Take back control of your computer.

To protect yourself against disasters, backup your system when it's
working properly with some disk imaging program, it will be far more
useful in case of some problem than System Restore.

Actually System Restore is very useful for fixing a registry related
screwup by the operator.

For some problems disk images ae an excellent resource, provided of
course that the image is reasonably current. Relying on disk images
and then not doing one for several weeks can be a bit of a bummer if
you need to recover.

System Restore is still a useful adjunct even with up to date image
backups, but you need to understand the purpose and limitations of
System Restore in order to use it effectively. The main limitation
is that it only works with System Files as in Windows System Files. It
does not protect user data files or the installed components of
application programs. However the registry and related files are
fully protected by System Restore and it can be extremely useful for
situations such as when you need to put the system back to the way it
was 10 minutes ago, before you installed Super Crappola version 9.

Good luck
