cannot use system restore

Hi,
Have bben trying to use system restore, but all of a sudden every time I try
message comes up saying "cannot restore to this point" I've checked SR
setting and everything is fine - has it something to do with Norton
Anti-virus which I have installed, or is it something else? Help appreciated.

Yes: MS XP newsgroups seem to include plenty of reports
that Symantec/Norton AV interferes with functions like
System Restore.

Hello,

Try it in safe mode instead. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449 (
How to start the System Restore tool by using the safe mode option with the
Command prompt in Windows XP) for a detailed guide on this

If you can post back why you are attempting a System Restore, we can try to
help you to fix a problem without relying on System Restore

If you have Norton versions in 2009 the AV won't cause such problems.
But apparently there were problems like that prior to this one. Here's
a good article on what Restore is all about:
http://bertk.mvps.org:80/html/description.html

Here's one way to Reinstall System Restore:
----------------------------------------------------------
How do I reinstall System Restore?

Warning: This will delete ALL existing restore points.
Go to Start - Run and type %Windir%\INF then press enter.

In Windows Explorer go to Tools - Folder Options - View Tab and uncheck
"Hide extensions for known file types".

Find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Or simply type or paste the following command into the Start - Run box
and press enter.

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf

If the Files Needed dialog box appears, click Browse and point to the
i386 folder on the Windows XP CD or to the i386 folder on the hard
drive, if it exists, of for systems updated with the Service Pack 2 CD
or Download from Microsoft, browse to the
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder.
----------------------------------------------------------

How do I Test System Restore?

Create a new restore point named TEST.

Create a new shortcut on the desktop and point it to My Computer or any
other file of your choice and name it TEST.

Now restore to the Test restore point.

The system will now reboot, and you will receive a message if the
restore was successful, and the Test shortcut on the desktop will be
gone. If not, follow these troubleshooting tips.

Note: This should be conducted periodically

----------------------------------------------------------

Bert Kinney has a lot of good articles on System Restore on his web
site.
