my Dell inspiron 1501 has XP home system. I have tried system restore for
various dates. Computer starts restore, shuts itself down and restarts, but
gives message that restore did not work. I also tried turning off Norton
security to system restore but that didn't work either. How can I solve the
prob? thanks

Try it in Safe Mode.

And if that doesn't work, boot to Safe Mode with Command Prompt and type in
c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and follow the instructions. It will
allow you to (possibly) restore when other methods may not.

f I was some malicious software and infected your computer, I would
also fix it so you could never do a System Restore to get rid of me.

What problems have prompted you to do a System Restore (just curious)?

Download Malwarebytes free software, install it, update and do a full
scan and try again.

Don't rely only on Mr. Norton.
