System Restore won't work

B

Bert Kinney

Hi,

The fix for this error, is reinstalling System Restore. Did you ever get
it reinstalled?

Make sure you can see hidden files by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before
"Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected
operating system files " is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to
see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before
"Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

Then as Bert Kinney suggests try reinstalling System Restore:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#ReinstallSR

Next check which drives System Restore is monitoring. It should only be
your C drive. Turn off monitoring of any other drives, which may be
listed.

Right click on your My computer icon on your Desktop and select
Properties, System Restore. Place the cursor on D drive, click on
Settings and check the box before "Turn off System Restore on
this drive" and return to the screen upon which Settings appears. Next
place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time find the
slider and drag it to the left until it reads 5% and exit. When you get
to the Settings screen click on. Apply and OK and exit. Finally run Disk
CleanUp to remove Temporary
Internet Files and the Disk Defragmenter on your C drive.

Now check whether System Restore is working.

Hope this helps.

I can't get berts procedure to reinstall system restore to work.

1. I have done as directed regarding the folders and making the files
viewable etc.

2. The problem I keep having now is after right clicking on sr.inf and
selecting install, the 'file needed' box opens, and I then do the next
step and 'browse' and select the ServicePackFiles directory and then
the i386 directory. It lists the sr.sys file that it is looking for and
I select 'open' and then 'ok', it then 'copying files' but then a box
with 'copy error' pops up containing text saying 'setup is unable to
copy the file srclient.dll' and some other text asking me to 'ensure
the location specified below is ok or insert the WindowsXP Home Edition
ServicePack 2 cd'...

3. I don't have a sp2 cd as sp2 was done thru the download from windows
and pointing to the servicepackfiles/i386 directory gives me the error.
If I skip that file another error occurs for the next .dll file it is
looking for but all these .dll files are in the servicepackfiles/i386
directory and each one is displayed in the 'locate file' box that pops
up for each as I go through the process.

I don't know how to get Windows to 'see' each file as I have set the
'folder', 'view' settings as directed.

Is there something basic I am doing wrong in running the sr.sys install
process?

In addition to the copy of srclient.dll in the servicepackfiles/i386
directory there is also a copy in C:\windows \system 32\ directory,
although that could be a copy of a file which is part of the System
Restore problem. However, I would copy the file to the i386 directory
and then try Bert's procedure again. It is worth a try.

If it doesn't work order a free copy of the Windows XP SP2 CD on line.
It will take a few days to reach you by post but it should resolve your
problem be useful if you have further problems involving SP2.

I've ordered the SP2 cd as the alternative you suggest of copying
srclient.dll at best would just get me to the next file copy error
since I noticed previously when I chose the 'skip' option then another
file copy errror occurred for the next file and next file and next
file. May be too many files to copy.

Thanx. We'll see is having the cd to copy files from makes a difference
but I'm not sure even that will as I see 'system restore' is 'started'
in the service menu but just gives the error when I try to use it.

To fix System Restore after migrating data to a new hard drive:

Click Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services.
Right-click System Restore Service and click Properties.
From the Startup Type drop-down, select Disabled.
Click OK.
Close the Services and Administrative Tools windows.
Right-click My Computer, click Properties, and click the System Restore
tab. The System Restore tab should now display properly; however, the
System Restore service will be disabled.
Enable System Restore and click Apply.

Thanx for the thought but I just installed a 300gb SATA hd and started
from scratch with a new xp install and copied my data files over as
well as imported outlook.pst, copied msfax folder and reinstalled all
my programs. Unfortunately the weeks worth of video I had edited can't
be configured to burn a dvd but I'll start that over again as I have
the raw video.

As I went thru the entire process I kept checking to see if System
restore was still functioning....just to see if I could figure out what
screwed it up in the first place. Wasn't the hd install, wasn't Maxblast
etc as it kept working.

The first time I used xp windows update wouldn't work but reinstalling
from scratch fixed that too.

Time to go Linux or something !!!!!!

PS the SP2 cd option didn't work either at fixing System restore.
