System Restore Won't Function

I have run into a problem for the last few months and have check many forums
and now am coming here. I have checked to make sure the restore function is
enabled and have also tired setting a new restore point, but each time I try
to restore to an earlier date it runs through the whole process and when it
reboots, I get the message that it was unable to restore. Help please!

Hi

That error message would suggest that one or more of the System Restore
files have become corrupt. You can try turning SR off/on, although you will
lose all existing checkpoints:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties>System Restore. Enable
'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - then reboot your PC. Go back into
SR and disable 'Turn off...' and then reboot again. After the second reboot
you should have one new checkpoint and SR should work properly after that.

Unfortunately, when System Restore malfunctions like this it usually means that one or more of the restore points have become corrupted. The only choice you have is to turn SR off, reboot the computer and then turn SR back on. This will delete all of the restore points.

Create a new restore point when you turn SR back on.

Thank you, Will and Ronnie for responding. Unfortunately, I have done this 2
times as well and never thought to mention it. That is the reason for months
of having this problem. No one seems to know what to say. Even though I have
new restore points none of them will follow through. I have scanned
everywhere for trojans/virus all of that and my machine seems to be clean.

Hi

Run Disk Cleanup and go to More Options>System Restore and delete all but
the last checkpoint. Reboot, then manually create a new checkpoint, reboot,
then see if the new checkpoint works.

Hi,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event
Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently
that may help us diagnose the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

Another possibility could be bad sectors on the hard drive. Turn off System
Restore. Then open My Computer and right click your C drive and select
Properties->Tools->Error-checking section "Check Now button"->place a check
mark next to both boxes and click Start. You will be prompted to restart
your computer. Let CHKDSK scan and look for disk errors to fix.

If you have a computer with the System recovery files in a seperate
petition, let's say "E", then you have to disable the monitoring of that
petition and all should work well from there. HP and several other
manufacturers put all of the Recovery files on a small petition of the hard
drive and it has a drive disignation, disable the monitoring of that drive
petition by going into System Restore and then going to the options.
