The System Restore application in WinXP acts strange. (Home Edition,-SR2
OS with all later uppdates)

I get an error popup message telling me that SR can`t perform a SR-point,
and that I
have to restart and retry.
But no luck!
Plus the system itself does`nt make any SR-points!

In EventID, in "computer-management" the message is, and quote:

Event-type:Error)
Event-source:sr
Event-categori:None
Event-ID:1
Date:03.14.2005
Time:13:06:21
User:I/T

Description:
Service Restore filter (something), received the unespected error

HarddiskVolum1. It has stopped monitoring the volum.

I`v tried supports (Mic.XP-H&S)!, -no luck!
(as an edition; "I have not Real Player installed)

"I found this and surveyed the conclusiv within it, but no luck!
See Q302796 - "Troubleshooting System Restore in Windows XP".

Error code: 0xC0000040 - This issue may occur under a rare set of
circumstances --
specifically, when a program or programs try to simultaneously access and
modify the
same file in a way that creates a conflict with the functions of the
System Restore
utility. See Q812119."
(ps: haven`t found; Q302796, but Q812119)

I`v tried Kelly`s (MVP) reg-file, "install on right click menu" to try to
reinstall SR (C:/WIN/inf/sr.inf) again, but Notepad opens instead of
initialising a new install of SR.

So "please" anyone! (??)

(ps: since then I`v turned the service of (deactivated service + deleted
directory). But I hate when there is something I can` fix + the fact that
I now do not
have the ability to use this service if needed. (!?)

Hi

One or more of the System Restore files could have been corrupted - try
turning SR off/on - but I'm afraid that you will lose any existing
checkpoints:

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab.
Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC. After
that 1st reboot go back into SR and disable 'Turn off System Restore on all
drives' and reboot your PC again. After that 2nd reboot you should have one
new SR checkpoint.

I whish it was that simple, but no luck! I have of course tried your
suggestion some times before.
Turned of SR in system/controlpanel/sr-button + also confirmed completely
shut-off by deactivated the sr-service in comp.management/services.
And then reversed (twice, proubably 10-20 times now, even before you
suggesteed this as well), but no luck!
That`s just got to be something else to do here!? I beliewe the puzzle
here is that there might be another application/program mingling with the
file in qustion (file_lst.cfg), which sr needs. I DON`T NOW?
And if so!? How can I find out which program/appl. is in conflict with
this file.

And how can I make a new install by left clicking on the sr.inf file and
choose install (which I have put there by Kelly`s reg-tweak), when nothing
happens except the file open in notepad. (looks my system can`t find
rundll instead slrundll (??)

Hi Thor,

Rather than left clicking on the sr.inf file, right click on it and
select install.

Next set the system to show hidden and system folders. Go to the
Control
Panel - Folder Options, and on the View tab, set the options so you
can see
hidden and system files:

Enable (check) "Display the contents of system folders"
Enable (check) "Show hidden files and folders"
Disable (uncheck): "Hide protected operating system files
(recommended)"
Disable (uncheck) "hide extensions for known file types".

Now do a search for the file_lst.cfg file on all drives. In the
Search tool make sure to click on More Advanced Options and select the
first three options before searching.

If the file is found on a drive other than C:\ stop System Restore
from monitoring that drive.

You may also be able to find out more information on the file by right
clicking on it and selecting properties.
