Robert

Continuing from my previous posts, I still have problems.
I'm using Windows XP Home, SP2 installed and on automatic updates.
System Restore only shows the most recent restore point and no other.
I have upgraded my RealPlayer to version 10.5, build 6.0.12.1235,
distribution RN30PRM and there are no further updates available except
plugins, which I don't want.

The error shown in "sr" below is not the same as the one attributed to
RealPlayer in Q812119 on http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html and when I
look at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp there is no information.

The most recent "sr" and "SRService" event information is pasted below.

Help would be much appreciated !

Regards,
Robert.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for checking the Event Logs. They are a big help.

The first Event Log indicates the System Restore filter encountered problem with
'desktop.ini' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume2'. It has stopped monitoring the volume. This
volume/partition is most likely not the partition Windows is installed on.

The second Event Log indicates that the System Restore service has resumed monitoring due
to space freed on the system drive. What this means is that System Restore was disabled do
to low disk space, and once enough free disk space was detected it was enabled. As the
result disabling System Restore, all restore points are deleted.

I would suggest going into the System Restore setting and stop it from monitoring
volumes/partition other that the one Windows is installed on. That should take care of the
problem.

How to disable a monitored drive.

I've done that - and found it was monitoring two partitions on a new second
hard disk I had fitted very recently. I've turned the monitoring off on
these two partitions now. Hope that fixes it ! I'll check it over the
next few days to see if it holds more Restore Points now.

Thank you very much for your help.
Rergards,
Robert.

You may be able to 'fix' System Restore but I have experienced a
similar problem, that is SR thinks I don't have sufficient space to
create a restore point despite their being 10GB available. I spent 6
months trying all suggestions to fix the problem and gave up. I now
use GoBack which does all SR does and more but of course you need to
purchase the program.

When you scan the NGs you cannot escape the conclusion that System
Restore is unreliable. I recognise the NGs are a snapshot of WINXP
users but I would guess problems with System Restore represent a
significant percentage of problems with the OS. I agree that the
fixes are often simple and amount to nothing more than either
restoring SR (sr.inf) or resetting (turning off, reboot, enable).
Nevertheless you only know there is a problem when you come to restore
the Registry and that is the last time you need to find you ability to
restore is kaput.

My advice is forget System Restore and either use GoBack or the
excellent and reliable freeware ERUNT. The fact SR may do a little
more than ERUNT is of no significance when SR is so unreliable.

Edward, understand you frustrations, but the problem you are experiencing differs greatly
from this issue. This issue is easily fixed. Your letting your personal experience
interfere with technical issues.

You could be right Bert, although I thought the issue was System Restore
reporting lack of available space when there was ample space available.
Perhaps I misunderstood.

Concerning my criticisms of SR, judging from the number of requests for help
for System Restore problems, in this and other NGs, as compared to any other
single problem, I think it reasonable to conclude System Restore is not
reliable. The big shortcoming of SR, in my opinion, is the one shot and
your out, that is each restore point is dependent upon the preceeding one so
if SR goes down you have lost all restore points. If anyone need a reliable
'backup' of the registry there is available more reliable software.

I've now got four Restore Points, so I think the problem I had is fixed.
Thank you very much
Regards,
Robert.
